Many of the area’s high school girls volleyball teams would make their way to Phoenix on Saturday for the Onondaga High School League tournament.
West Genesee was not one of them, but the Wildcats’ late-season turnaround continued Thursday when it defeated Fayetteville-Manlius in four sets after getting swept by the Hornets on Sept. 18.
A close first set went 26-24 in WG’s favor, and it won the second 25-18. F-M dominated the third set 25-8, and were close to forcing a fifth set before the Wildcats broke a 24-24 tie and held serve to win again 26-24 in the fourth and end it.
Doing it all, Anna Snyder gained 24 assists, nine digs and five kills, while on defense Mackenzie Winn managed 24 digs. Brynn Zajac earned 11 kills, with Isabella Allen earning nine kills and six digs. Mia Lamanna contributed five kills.
Westhill kept itself undefeated with a pair of sweeps, the Warriors smashing past Institute of Technology Central 25-7, 25-13, 25-7 Tuesday night as it got 21 aces, five of them from Tori Militi to go with her 20 assists. Grace O’Connell added four aces as Sara Galante got 10 kills and O’Connell added five kills.
A day later, Westhill routed Mexico 25-10, 25-7, 25-17. Schwartz had 12 assists and Gianna Militi had 12 digs as, up front, Galante earned nine kills and Heinrich added four kills.
Skaneateles improved its mark to 14-2 in Tuesday’s match against 11-3 LaFayette. The Lakers won the first and third sets by 25-21 margins, with the Lancers claiming the second set 25-23. Also, the fourth set was close, but Skaneateles closed it out 25-20 as Maeve Canty amassed 26 kills and 19 digs.
Emma Keady earned 33 assists and eight digs, with Kristen Henry getting six kills and Rory Comer adding five kills, seven assists and seven digs. Emma Miller had 13 digs to go with Henry’s 14 digs and Alex Csemez finished with nine digs.
Marcellus routed Phoenix 25-11 in the first set and 25-8 in the third, with a 25-23 set in between as Brook Finarty had 10 kills, with Bronte Stahl getting 10 assists, four aces and four kills. Anna Fern earned seven kills and Jenna Mattison finished with 17 assists.
Meeting Homer on Thursday, the Mustangs lost in four sets. The two sides split 25-18 sets before the Trojans won close 25-23 and 26-24 decisions in the third and fourth.
Mattison had 15 assists and Stahl gained 11 assists, plus nine kills. Fern added eight kills and Finarty had five kills to go with seven digs. Defensively, Evelyn Webster had 18 digs and Elaine Grattan finished with 15 digs.
Bishop Ludden continued a late-season surge with its 25-21, 25-17, 25-14 sweep over Phoenix, with Jasmine Cuffee getting eight kills and 10 digs as Megan Virkler also had eight kills, plus six aces. Kate Ruddy produced 23 assists and Ally Royal added six digs. Mia Mignacca finished with five aces.
Then Ludden handled Altmar-Parish-Williamstown 25-12, 25-15, 25-20 on Thursday night to move to 12-5 overall. Ruddy and Royal both served up seven aces, Ruddy adding 13 assists as Royal got nine digs and Cuffee produced eight kills.
Jordan-Elbridge got a 25-20, 25-16, 20-25, 25-18 victory over Syracuse Academy of Science Tuesday night. Elizabeth Bartoszewski had 12 digs and Sarah Lane had 11 assists, with Ranait McGuire earning five blocks.
Against Bishop Grimes on Thursday, the Eagles prevailed 25-18, 20-25, 25-7, 25-18 to improve to 9-10 overall, with 15 assists from Lane and 14 digs from Bartoszewski. McGuire amassed 13 kills and four blocks, while Eaton had six kills and eight digs.
Solvay had a long battle with Homer Tuesday, dropping the first two sets 25-165 and 25-10, but roaring back to take the next two sets 25-16 and 25-21 before a 25-10 loss to the Trojans in the final set.
Sophia Guadagnolo recorded 36 assists for the Bearcats as Myah Platler got 14 kills and 13 digs. Isabelle Lambert had nine kills, with Genea Kadlubowski earning eight kills and six digs. Alicia Granger had 19 digs and six kills as Jordan Bamba produced 18 digs.
In Thursday night’s 25-8, 20-25, 25-20, 25-19 win over Living Word Academy, the Bearcats saw Granger produce seven kills, seven aces and eight digs, with Platler and Anastasia LaFlair each earning six kills. Guadagnolo had 28 assists, five aces and five digs, Bamba getting 12 digs and Lambert earning four aces.
