It wasn’t performance, but rather modest numbers on its roster, which kept the Baldwinsville girls swim team from keeping pace with quality opposition during its first seven meets of the season.
All of that changed in Tuesday’s home contest against Syracuse City, with the Bees garnering enough points in enough places to claim its first victory in 2019 by a 54-40 margin.
B’ville trailed through the first three races, even though Clare Burke went two minutes, 14.90 seconds to prevail in the 200-yard freestyle nad Kali Sacco claimed the 200-yard individual medley in 2:26.32.
Ashley Konz’s victory in the 50 freestyle in 26.57 seconds tied it, 17-17, and when Burke returned to swim the 100 butterfly in 1:10.15 with Emma Branigan in third place, the Bees went ahead for good.
Sacco, in 58.93 seconds, won the 100 freestyle as Mercedez Walker finished third. Konz dominated the 500 freestyle, earning her second victory of the night in 5:44.91.
Then Konz, Sacco, Madeline Sauro and Kate Cornell worked together to beat Syracuse, 1:53.36 to 1:59.92, in the 200 freestyle relay, Sauro following up in the 100 backstroke by holding off Syracuse’s Mai Siwinski, 1:15.06 to 1:16.97.
Makenna Williams was second and Ellianna Leggett third in the 100 breaststroke, and the Bees clinched the meet when Burke, Konz, Sacco and Sauro went 4:08.69 in the 400 freestyle relay.
Home again next Tuesday night, B’ville would face Liverpool, and then goes to Nottingham on Oct. 18 for the Salt City Athletic Conference championship meet.
