Just as it reached the midway point of the regular season, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls soccer team took a rare tumble.
At Central Square last Tuesday night, J-D was stunned, 3-2, by the Redhawks, who rallied from a second-half deficit and prevailed when Erin Herrmann scored in the first overtime period.
It was the first time J-D had lost any regular-season since Fulton beat them 1-0 on Sept. 22, 2017, exactly two years and two days before Central Square did the same.
Back on Sept. 7, the Rams beat the visiting Redhawks 5-2, but in the rematch Central Square did not get unnerved when J-D claimed a 2-1 first-half lead on goals by Megan Baker and Tonia Kousmanidis and, as usual, controlled most of the possession
Instead, the Redhawks pulled even in the second half. Then Herrmann, who along with Cora Keohane had scored Central Square’s goal, hit a well-timed shot past J-D goalie Katie Cappelletti early in the first of two 10-minute OT periods.
Somehow, the Redhawks’ defense fended off the Rams the rest of the way, anchored by goalkeeper Samantha Haley, who turned back 19 of 21 shots to give Central Square one of the biggest victories in that program’s history.
Ironically, Fulton was the Rams’ next opponent on Friday (following a weather postponement on Thursday) and felt J-D’s wrath, just as it did when the Rams beat them 8-0 earlier in September.
This one wasn’t as lopsided, but J-D still prevailed 5-0, scoring four times in the first half as Kousmanidis found the net twice, adding an assist. Grace Dimkopoulos, Lindsay Hildreth and Rori Leach had the other goals, with Megan Baker and Nora Prosak earning assists.
East Syracuse Minoa had no trouble in last Tuesday’s 7-0 win over Syracuse City, with Bella Pickard and Angelina Polcaro each scoring twice. Single goals went o to Jenna Hudgins, Katherine Cox and Gianna Coccagnia. Natalie Peterson had two assists as Pickard and Abby Hudgins also got assists.
The Spartans had a closer call in Thursday night’s game at Auburn, but a pair of first-half tallies led to a 2-0 shutout of the Maroons as Polcaro and Hudgins put shots in the net and goalie Isabelle Chavoustie recorded four saves.
On Saturday, ESM won another 7-0 decision over Syracuse, this time with Jenna Hudgins scoring twice. Polcaro got a goal and two assists as Cox, Abby Hudgins, Laura Sitnik and Jazzel Meikleham also earned goals, Peterson picking up two assists as Meikelham and Coccagina got one assist apiece.
Christian Brothers Academy used a pair of early goals to defeat Solvay 2-0 last Tuesday at Alibrandi Stadium. Bella Roberson and Delaney Hayden picked up those goals, assisted by Grace Stanard and Roene Nasr. CBA’s defense held the Bearcats to just three shots.
Against visiting Liverpool on Saturday, the Brothers won again, edging the Warriors 2-1 as Kennedy Paciaga carried CBA, scoring twice in the second half to negate a tally by the Warriors’ Abby Brancato. Katelyn Courcy earned an assist and Emily Jones made seven saves.
On Saturday, Bishop Grimes faced Manlius-Pebble Hill, and it turned into a thriller, both sides scoring three times in the second half of a back-and-forth affair.
But the Cobras’ first-half tally made the difference as it beat the Trojans 4-3, eventually getting two goals from Rosalie Vincent as Jaida Addley and Jenna Sloan also converted. MPH in defeat, had goals from Madelyn Huff, Natalie Storie and Peri Cannavo.
Earlier in the week, Grimes prevailed 4-0 over LaFayette last Tuesday afternoon, the Cobras getting two goals from Sloan as Mary Kate Tweedale and Kate Murphy earned the other goals. Abby Tweedale earned an assist as all of Grimes’ goals came in the first half.
Things turned around last Thursday when Grimes met Fabius-Pompey and lost, 2-0, to the Falcons. Cobras goalie Natalie Musolino made seven saves, but F-P used second-half goals by Ashley Osborn and Kinsey Moll to go in front.
MPH went out last Monday and lost, 5-0, to Tully, but rebounded in a big way on Thursday afternoon, scoring three times in the first half against Cato-Meridian and blanking the Blue Devils 4-0.
Huff had two of the Trojans’ goals, with Cannavo adding a pair of assists. Storie and Abigail Hinshaw earned the other goals in MPH’s second win of the season.
