In a span of three weeks, the girls swim teams from Fayetteville-Manlius, Jamesville-DeWitt and Christian Brothers Academy had what amounted to a local round robin.
The Hornets swept its two closest neighbors on Sept. 10 and 19. Then J-D and CBA met each other last Tuesday night, and the Brothers got the best of it, outlasting the Red Rams 98-87 to earn its first win over J-D in a decade.
CBA swept all three relay races, starting in the 200 medley, where Lauren Kelly, Darien Tompkins, Ally Howard and Sophia Silver went one minute, 55.34 seconds to the 1:58.70 from J-D’s Amelia Hesler, Sofia Bebla, Claire Huyck and Gwen Lister.
Kelly went from there to a time of 1:02.47 in the 100 butterfly, well clear of Lister’s 1:07.93, and also had a first-place time of 1:07.47 to win the 100 breaststroke over Bebla, who was second in 1:12.18 as Lister (1:12.93) was third.
Tompkins also won twice for the Brothers, roaring to a time of 2:18.69 in the 200 individual medley as Bebla (2:29.57) finished second. And in the 100 backstroke, Tompkins won in 1:05.01 to Huyck’s second-place 1:08.16.
Kayla Newman stood out again for CBA, first by going 1:58.46 to dominate the 200 freestyle and then, in the 500 freestyle, prevailing in 5:21.42, the only one in the field under six minutes.
Right after that, Newman joined Silver, Kaitlyn Bushnell and Kathryn Nardella to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:48.91 to the Red Rams’ 1:54.07. To close out the meet, Newman, Bushnell, Tompkins and Kelly roared to first place in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:48.86.
Where J-D did win was in the sprints, thanks to Hesler. She swam the 50 freestyle in 25.57 seconds to Bushnell’s 25.89, while in the 100 freestyle Hesler sped to a time of 54.79 seconds, well clear of Bushnell, who was second in 57.95.
In the diving competition, the Rams’ Abby McGuire finished first, earning 194.05 points as CBA’s Sophie Menar (164.15) edged J-D’s Grace Evans (163.25) for second place.
F-M raced that same night, against Cicero-North Syracuse at Le Moyne College, and cruised to a 96-70 victory with its usual display of talent and versatility.
The Hornets swept the top three in the 200 freestyle, where Meghan Seidberg won in 2:08.30, and the 200 IM, where Lindsay Mathews prevailed in 2:22 flat over Addie Antshel’s 2:24.47. Mathews also claimed the 500 freestyle in 5:33.02, with Seidberg second.

J-D went to Le Moyne Thursday for its own meet with C-NS, and the Red Rams prevailed 97-86, Hesler reducing her 50 freestyle time to 25.35 seconds before going 54.96 seconds to win the 100 freestyle.
