While it had already enjoyed a fine season, the Westhill boys golf team reached a new peak when it traveled to Drumlins last Monday afternoon and recorded a 205-209 victory over Christian Brothers Academy.
The Brothers were atop the OHSL Liberty division standings, and Joe Nicholson shot 36 to pace CBA and lead all individuals as Dan Angelo added a 39.
Westhill countered with 39s from Anthony Maglisco and Aidan Ryan, and it was Luke Gilmartin’s 40 that pushed the Warriors in front since James Stanton, with a 44, had CBA’s third-best total. Devin Young followed with a 46 and Michael Britt added a 51.
Now wanting to avoid a letdown, Westhill would host Skaneateles a day later at Camillus Hills, and again it proved close – but once more, the Warriors prevailed, topping the Lakers 216-222.
The individual race went to Skaneateles’ Tynan Jones, whose 37 was three shots ahead of Maglisco’s 40. But the Warriors surged in front when Ryan shot a 41 and Gilmartin added a 42.
Both were ahead of the Lakers’ second-best total of 43 from Tyson DiRubbo. Then Ryan Rolince and James Hunt both shot 46 to clinch it for Westhill as Skaneateles got a 45 from Shawn Luce, a 46 from Drew Henderson and a 51 from Will Cowden.
To complete a 3-0 week, Westhill defeated Mexico 205-239 on Friday as Maglisco’s 37 was one better than Gilmartin’s 38. Ryan finished with a 41, followed by a 43 from Young and a 46 from Britt.
West Genesee again challenged SCAC Metro division sides and showed signs that it was rounding into the dangerous late-season form that had led to Section III Class AA tournament titles in recent years.
The Wildcats handled Fayetteville-Manlius White 184-199 last Wednesday at Westvale as Kevin McDermott, with a 35, led a well-balanced effort. Dan Benetti and Ryan McLane both shot 36, with Cody Steckel getting a 38 and Peyton Mullane adding a 39.
But WG would have to go up against first-place Fayetteville-Manlius Green and Cicero-North Syracuse in this, the last week of the regular season, before the Oct. 2 sectional final at Radisson.
