For the third year in a row, Jordan-Elbridge boys track and field standout Marion Quigley is on his way to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships in the pentathlon.
Quigley won the five-event competition during Friday’s Section III state meet open qualifier at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium, and will be favored to reach the awards podium during next weekend’s state meet at Middletown.
Earning 3,322 points, Quigley pulled away from Carthage’s Tom Albright (3,030) at the qualifier, and was top in Division II (small schools) over Camden’s Josh Mayden by 313 points.
J-E was also fourth in the girls 4×800 relay in 10:06.97 and fifth in the boys 4×800 in 8:43.53, with the boys also fifth in the 4×400 relay in 3:39.93.
Westhill had Ashley Heffernan earn a runner-up finish in the Division II pole vault, where she cleared 10 feet behind South Jefferson’s Marlena Jacobs (10’6″) as Marcellus had Julianna Szczech finish seventh, topping nine feet.
Heffernan was third in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.99 seconds and helped Ashley Bolesh, Erica Gangemi and Angie Mesa-Espinosa get second place (50.74 seconds) to Canastota (50.33) in the 4×100 relay.
Bolesh, Mesa-Espinosa, Katherine Evans and Lauren Bendall second in the 4×400 in 4:09.43, inches behind South Jefferson’s winning 4:09.41, with Mesa-Espinosa fourth in the 200-meter dash in 26.84 seconds. Lennah Abraham had a second-place discus throw of 108’7″, while Brigid Heinrich (93 feet) was fifth.
On the boys side, Westhill’s Dan Washburn was second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:01.60, while Evan Ballard was third in the discus (116’9″) and third in the shot put with a heave of 44’6″.
West Genesee had Dan Gill, Jakob Petrocci, Patrick Peris and Esisas Brumfield get third place in the Division I (large school) 4×100 in 43.93 seconds. Matt Bartolotta was third in the Division I mile in 4:42.42.
Then Gill finished third in the 100-meter dash in 11.19 seconds, with Brumfield fifth in 11.48 seconds.
The girls Wildcats were third in the 4×400 relay in 4:15.79, fifth in the Division I 4×800 in 10:13.36 and fifth in the 4×100 in 51.63 seconds.
Olivia Becker was sixth in the 100 hurdles and Natalie Buckhout took eighth place in the 1,500-meter run, with Caitlin Mills seventh and Sandy Gardino eighth in the 100 sprint. Mikeayla DeJesus was ninth in the 400-meter dash.
Skaneateles featured, in the boys Division II meet, Caleb Bender earning third place in the mile in 4:35.15. Connor Gell was seventh in the 400 sprint in 54.41 seconds, with Nicola Kunz seventh in the 400 hurdles in 1:01.40.
On the girls side, Emme Conan, Grace Conan, Graeson Landsberg and Eva Vitsaxaki finished third in the 4×100 in 51.32 seconds, with Emme Conan fourth in the 100 sprint in 12.99 seconds and ninth in the 200 in 27.50 seconds.
Solvay contended in the boys Division II 4×100, where Allen Cawthon, X’Zavier Morris, Elijah Wright and Brendon Carolina were second in 45.18 seconds to Cazenovia (44.78) as Westhill was fourth in 45.70 seconds and J-E (46..09) took sixth place.
Carolina went on to a second-place finish in the long jump, going 21’1″, one foot behind the 22’1″ from New Hartford’s Sei Sei, while Kyra Crossett was third in the girls high jump, clearing 4’10”.
