Encouraged by its close call against front-runner Fayetteville-Manlius on May 1 at Green Lakes, the Liverpool girls golf team worked toward its second meeting with the Hornets last Thursday afternoon at Liverpool Country Club.
And this proved tight and competitive, too, both sides battling through windy, wet conditions and still posting fine scores, though again it was F-M finishing on top as it beat the Warriors 190-197.
Once more, the low rounds came from Mia Avotins, who posted a nine-hole score of 41, and Natalya Avotins, who finished with a 44. Hanna Dombroski had a 55, with Lindsey Toper getting a 57, backed up by Julia Commane (61) and McKenzie Cahl (67).
Just like in the first match that Liverpool lost 176-178, F-M’s depth helped it overcome what the Avotins sisters posted. Bailey Wallace led the Hornets with a 45, with Justine Burness shooting 47. Lucy Fowler and Kira Graves both finished at 49, just ahead of Ashley Carter (50) and Elly Hulslander (51).
Three days earlier, the Warriors roared past Cicero-North Syracuse’s Green team 183-267 at Northern Pines. Mia Avotins shot a 37 and Natalya Avotins added a 41. Hanna Dombroski got a 52 and Lindsey Toper earned a 57 as Gabby Diorio led the Northstars with a 67.
C-NS’s Blue team had its own battle with F-M last Monday at Green Lakes, unable to keep up with the Hornets in a 175-204 defeat.
Amy Krohl had a 47, but that trailed F-M’s trio of Justin Burness (39), Bailey Wallace (42) and Elly Hulslander (46), while Abby Ainsworth had a 49. McKenzie LaLone had a 52, beating out Emma Piper (56) and Jessica Ricciardi (58).
As that went on, Baldwinsville defeated West Genesee 219-227 at Westvale, improving to 5-3 on the season with scores of 49, 51, 58 and 61 overcoming the 44 from the Wildcats’ Mikaela Riley.
When C-NS Blue met C-NS Green last Wednesday at Northern Pines, Blue won 175-258, Ainsworth posting a 38 to beat out Krohl (39) for individual honors as Piper and Makenzie Lalone both shot 49. Josie Gabriell led C-NS Green with a 63, ahead of Mackenie Wessels (64), Kayleigh Virginia (65) and Cali Heick (66).
C-NS Green went on to a 220-262 defeat to West Genesee on Thursday afternoon. Virginia shot a 63, ahead of Wessels (64) and Gabriell (66) as Riley led the Wildcats with a 48.
All of Friday’s scheduled matches were rained out, leaving a little more for this week, the last of the regular season before the May 21 Section III tournament at Kanon Valley.
