Now all of the area’s boys and girls golf teams are well underway, the weather having mostly cooperated in April to melt the snows and then create conditions necessary for everyone to start on time.
Expected to lead the OHSL Liberty division, the Marcellus boys already had a 231-317 win over Weedsport on April 11 in the books when it resumed 12 days later and handled Pulaski 217-244.
At the Links at Sunset Ridge, Shawn Colella nearly matched par for nine holes, his 37 six shots ahead of the 43 by the Blue Devils’ Chris Olson.
Lee Piekiel matched Olson’s 43, and the Mustangs’ depth took over from there, Patrick Morocco and John White each shooting 45 and Will Glass adding a 47 as David Bosak posted a 49.
Moving to 3-0 on the season Wednesday afternoon, Marcellus hosted Jordan-Elbridge and won big again, stopping the Eagles 205-278 as, again, Colella finished with a 37.
Morocco improved to a 40, just ahead of Bosak and Piekiel, who finished at 41. White had a 46 and Glass finished with a 48. J-E’s Ben Sullivan had a 46, ahead of Jeremy Melfi’s 50 as Colin Jewsbury posted a 55.
In Thursday’s match against Bishop Grimes, the Mustangs rolled again, a 198-241 victory over the Cobras where Colella had his best round of the week, a 35.
Bosak improved to a 39, with 40s scored by Morocco an Piekiel ahead of the 42 from Grimes’ Anthony Falgiatano. Lukas Stasyuk stepped up with a 44 and White finished with a 47.
Solvay lost, 211-314, to Manlius-Pebble Hill last Tuesday afternoon at Pine Grove. Brendan Smith shot a 45 for the Bearcats, though it was well back of the blistering 31 by Trojans star Johnny Gruninger. A 213-308 defeat to Cato-Meridian followed on Wednesday, with Smith shooting a 51.
In girls golf, West Genesee saw its opener against SCAC Metro division front-runner Fayetteville-Manlius shortened to seven holes by rain, but that was enough time for the Hornets to establish control as it beat the Wildcats 135-175.
Miki Riley led WG with a 35, but five different F-M golfers shot 38 or lower, led by the 31 from Justine Burness. Maria Bove posted a 44 for the Wildcats as Maddy Van Dyke and Alexa Robbins both shot 49. Chrissy Van Allen (51) and Ashley Arlukiewicz (53) followed.
Skaneateles won three straight season-opening matches, starting with a 243-265 decision over Bishop Grimes last Monday afternoon at the Links at Erie Village as Julia Marshall shot a 58 to pace the Lakers.
A day later, Skaneateles won a Laker duel with Cazenovia 227-238 as Lili Winkelman and Tess Peterson, both shooting 55, matched the low individual total of Cazenovia’s Sophie Clancy at Skaneateles Country Club.
On Thursday, a third straight win was notched by Skaneateles over Chittenango 239-305. At Woodcrest, Peterson improved to a 52, with Marshall getting a 57 as Winklelman (62), Fallon Lynn (68) and Ivy Carter (71) followed.
Meanwhile, Marcellus had its own match with Bishop Grimes at Tuscarora, the Mustangs prevailing 241-274over the Cobras to claim its season opener.
Grace Alexander shot a 56, leading a Marcellus sweep of the top four individual spots. Kendall Koloski had a 59, with Megan Mitchell adding a 62 and Sophia Matthews contributing a 64. Bronte Stahl had a 65 and Brooke Spaeth shot 66.
Westhill went to Woodcrest last Tuesday and edged Chittenango 265-273, with Kate Vaughan’s 63 the low individual round for the Warriors. Grace McMahon added a 67, the same as the Bears’ duo of Bailey Ford and Emily Collado.
On Wednesday, Marcellus took its turn at Woodcrest and topped Chittenango 228-265, with the five best rounds of the afternoon. Matthews led with a 54, with Mitchell getting a 56. Stahl improved to a 59 to match Alexander and Koloski finished with a 61.
In the Mustangs’ narrow 220-222 defeat to CBA on Thursday at Drumlins, Alexander, with a 49, had the low round by five strokes over the Brothers’ Annie Kilmartin.
Stahl had a 55, which Elizabeth Lucas and Aubrey Mills equaled for CBA, while Koloski got a 56, but the 62 shot by Brooke Spaeth was behind the 56 from Makenna Schultz and the 57 from Paige Snyder.
