Just as soon as school resumed, each of the East Syracuse Minoa track and field teams hit the heart of its SCAC Empire division schedule, determined to keep pace with front-runners Jamesville-DeWitt.
The Spartans hosted a three-team meet last Monday against Oswego and PSLA-Fowler, and easily won each side of it, with the girls handling the Buccaneers 91-50 and the Falcons 114-22.
ESM’s girls swept most of the field events, led by Julia Perrotta, who tied Maria Markert by clearing 9 feet in the pole vault and also won the triple jump with a top attempt of 32’10”.
Sara Bourdon threw the shot put 32’6” and was second in the discus (80’11”), with Rhiannon Butchko clearing 5’3” in the high jump. Sophie Hartz had a first-place long jump of 14’10”.
On the track, Lailani Carrion was first in the 400-meter dash in 1:06.4, with Hartz going 12.9 seconds in the 100 hurdles. Allmedina Mujcic won the 400 hurdles in 1:20.9 as the Spartans prevailed in the 4×100 (52.4 seconds) and 4×400 (4:41.1) relays, with legs run by Hartz, Carrion, Kaleigh Maloof, Rylie King, Rachael Ladd and Hannah Kowanes.
Meanwhlie, the boys Spartans rolled past Oswego 108-32 and PSLA-Fowler 111-23, Myles Riggins getting three titles as he ran the 100 sprint in 11.1 seconds, the 110 hurdles in 15.6 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 24 seconds flat.
Elijah Buck again flourished in throwing events, heaving the discus 105’9” to edge Kevin Hasty (98’ ½”) and the shot put 40’5” as Logan Cowell (36’5 ¼”) was second. Ermin Alemic, with a triple jump of 40’8”, edged teammate Rocky El (40 feet) as Michael Parks cleared 8 feet in the pole vault.
Nick Berg was first in the mile in 2:08.9 and the 800-meter run in 2:08.9, while Conner Hillman went 1:06.3 for first place in the 400 hurdles.
Also, Berg helped Josh Cain, Ray Lorenzo and Michael Sanders go 9:07 flat in the 4×800 relay as Andrew Crone joined Berg, Cain and Lorenzo to win the 4×400 in 3:48.9.
J-D countered on Wednesday with a sweep of Fulton, the boys prevailing 95-46 as Nick Dekaney and James Richer each won twice, Dekaney going 35’6” in the triple jump and claiming the 110 hurdles in 16.1 seconds.
Richer threw the discus 121’3” and the shot put 41’2”, while Caleb Smith went 19’7” in the long jump and Ben Virgo cleared 9 feet in the pole vault.
On the oval, Fidel Martinez ran the 400 hurdles in 1:02.7, with Andrew Balotin taking the 100 in 11.6 seconds and Nick Mannion going 54.1 seconds in the 400 sprint. J-D also swept the 4×100 (46.3 seconds), 4×400 (3:49.6) and 4×800 relays.
Fayetteville-Manlius was at home, facing Baldwinsville and West Genesee without many of its top girls runners who had traveled to Philadelphia to compete –and win – a big race in the 125th Penn Relays.
For those girls Hornets who stayed at home. Isabel Zuber had a first-place long jump of 16’11”, with Emily Cook going 11:20.44 in the 3,000-meter run. Amelia Amack was first in the 800 in 2:33.63 and helped Cook as the Hornets won the 4×800 in 10:16.44.
F-M’s boys beat WG 67-63 as it lost 88-53 to B’ville, getting quite a run from Sam Otis as he covered the mile in 4:35.24 before Nolan Chiles won the 800 in 2:04.94.
Peyton Geehrer was first in the 3,200 in 9:45.43, and the Hornets also won twice in the throwing events, seeing Dan Sokolovic toss the shot put 41’9” and Sawyer Dereszynski heave the discus 119’10 ½”.
Christian Brothers Academy lost 82-54 to Homer in last Wednesday’s boys meet, this despite a trio of 1-2 finishes in sprints.
Sean Smith, in 12.4 seconds, beat out Marcus Howard (12.6) in the 100, with David Kenney (24.0 seconds) beating Jaden Buckingham (24.4) in the 200 as Zach Medicis won the 400 hurdles in 1:06.6, edging Sam Lustig’s 1:07.4.
Conner Schmidt was first in the 400 sprint in 56.3 seconds and helped the Brothers tear to first place in the 4×100 relay in 49.0 seconds. Steve Sayles tied for first in the high jump, clearing 5’2” as Howard was second in triple jump, going 33’1”.
