As one of the favorites for this Saturday’s Section III Class AA championships at West Genesee, the Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA wrestling team did not want to overlook any of its opponents beforehand.’
The Rams faced Mexico last Wednesday night, and won each of the first five bouts on the card to create enough of a cushion for an eventual 49-33 win over the Tigers.
Ethan Wells took a forfeit at 132 pounds. Then, in the first contested bout at 138 pounds, Carlos Martinez got a pin over Tom Gessner late in the first period.
Alikhan Abdullayev followed at 145 pounds by pinning Patrick Johnson midway through the second period as Cameron Schultz (152 pounds) beat Bryan Stock 14-4 before a forfeit to Shoh Alibekov at 160 pounds.
Of the next five bouts, Mexico won four of them, the only exception James Richer’s third-period pin of 182-pound opponent Austin Miller as the Tigers controlled the higher weight classes, including Harley Wakeman beating Brandon Milham 9-6 at 170 pounds.
But at 99 pounds, Jackson Thomas pinned Ryan Gates as David BeSeth (106 pounds) earned a third-period fall of his own over George Smith. Those wins clinched the team victory for J-D/CBA as Tyler Kellison (126 pounds) ended with a 6-2 win over Dean Shambo.
Before the onset of the winter storm on Jan. 19, Fayetteville-Manlius was able to fit in its own dual meet, and would go 3-2 overall.
The Hornets started with a 56-18 win over Oneida, with Ben Christopher’s 7-4 win over Ridgley VanDyke at 152 the closest bout. Kyle Sykes (106), Alex Dauksza (160), Will Coley (182) and Zack Henderson (285 pounds) each got pins, with Coley taking just 24 seconds to finish off Ryan Chen.
During a 39-29 defeat to Lowville, Charlie Josephson (220 pounds) got a 26-second pin over Dylan Farr as Dauksza and Sawyer Dereszynski (170) claimed close bouts, Dereszynski beating Isaac Lyndaker 5-3. Braden Florczyk (126) blanked Cole Reed 16-0.
Rome Free Academy then topped F-M 51-30, with the hosts getting just two wins on the mat from Dauksza, who beat Tejas Desai 5-3, and Dereszynski, who edged Jonathan Walston 9-6.
But the Hornets rebounded by defeating Syracuse 42-31, all from forfeits, and closed by routing Cortland 65-11 as Florczyk (at 120 pounds), Christopher and Dereszynski earned pins, with Justin Bedell (145) getting a 17-0 technical fall over Luca Canzano.
F-M followed up by hosting Mexico in a head-to-head match last Tuesday night just before CBA/J-D had its match with the Tigers, and the Hornets did well late in the contest, but ceded too much early ground in a 45-35 defeat.
After Josephson won the opener 16-3 over Jacob O’Reilly, barely missing a technical fall, F-M saw Mexico get pins in the next four bouts which, combined with a trio of forfeits, provided the winning points.
Florczyk still got a 63-second pin over Derrick Sciarabba, while Xavier Varela, at 126, edged Michael Smith 9-7. Christopher pinned Johnson in the third period.
Following a forfeit to Coley at 160, Dauksza, moved up to 170, shut out Wakeman 9-0, with Dereszynski earning a pin over Austin Miller late in the second period. Bedell took a 4-0 defeat to Shambo.
East Syracuse Minoa competed Saturday in the Akley Duals at Oswego High School, where it went 2-2, starting out with a narrow 36-35 win over Auburn clinched when Conor Todd, at 220, pinned Jaden Dawley in 34 seconds.
The Spartans fell 48-36 to Whitesboro and took a one-point defeat to Baldwinsville 40-39, but beat host Oswego 39-30 to close out the meet.
