Week after week, and match after match, the Chittenango girls volleyball team has absorbed every opponent’s best effort and still emerged on top without any kind of stress.
The Bears were 13-0, and still hadn’t lost a set all season, as it played twice more last week, starting with a trip to Port Byron that included another comfortable sweep.
Chittenango took the first set 25-13, and each of the next two sets by equal 25-17 margins as Tyla Cutrie was dominant at the net, earning 20 kills and adding four aces, plus four digs.
Bayla Cutrie had a fine all-around effort of 11 assists, seven kills, three digs and two aces. Savannah Penoyer had five kills and eight assists, while Shelby Maring earned 14 assists and five digs. Carolyn Myka notched five assists as Jada Masciat gained three kills and three blocks. Sydney Pellman added five digs.
Chittenango’s match with Cortland on Wednesday was postponed, but against Christian Brothers Academy on Friday night, the Bears again needed just three sets to prevail, taking out the Brothers 25-17, 25-21, 25-18.
Though it wasn’t as lopsided as some of the matches this winter, Chittenango still had full control, with Bayla Cutrie getting 11 assists, three kills and four digs as Maring had 10 assists and four digs.
Up front, Tyla Cutrie managed 13 kills and five blocks, adding six digs. Penoyer had four kills and five digs, while libero Brenna Stanton put away four aces to go with eight digs. Pellman managed seven digs and Sarah Martin contributed six digs.
To finish up an undefeated regular season, Chittenango would need to beat Whitesboro Wednesday and Cortland on Friday night.
Over in boys volleyball, Chittenango, who had lost five-set decisions to Sauquoit Valley and Vernon-Verona-Sherrill earlier in the month, had a rougher time against Canastota last Thursday night.
The Red Raiders moved to 5-0 on the season by sweeping the Bears 25-19, 25-20, 25-23. Chittenango got four aces, six assists and two kills from Noah Watson as Tom McIntosh earned nine assists. Nick Callahan had six kills, with Austin Strickler adding five kills. Zephaniah Scott had four kills and Seth Kimball had three kills.
