A memorable month of December for the Chittenango girls volleyball team included two more lopsided sweeps in a span of 24 hours before a prolonged holiday break.
First, the Bears visited Faith Heritage last Tuesday night, a match where Chittenango’s routine effort led to a 25-15, 25-13, 25-10 romp over the Saints.
A few days removed from signing her college letter of intent to play beach volleyball at University of North Carolina-Charlotte, Tyla Cutrie recorded five kills, but gladly ceded the spotlight to others.
That included Carolyn Myka, who earned seven assists as Shelby Maring got five aces to go with her four assists, a total Katie Simmons matched. Jada Masciat put together three kills, four blocks and two aces.
Savannah Penoyer earned six kills as she and Tori Foran both gained four aces. Chloe Foran had four kills and two aces as Chelsea Lamphere had three kills, three blocks and two aces.
A day later, taking on Manlius-Pebble Hill, Chittenango rolled again as the Bears bashed the Trojans 25-8, 25-16, 25-14.
Masciat, Penoyer and Sydney Pellman each got four aces and Chittenango finished with 23 aces overall. Tyla Cutrie had three aces to go with her six kills as Penoyer earned five kills, with Bayla Cutrie picking up eight assists and Sarah Martin producing eight digs.
During the holiday break, Chittenango would go north to face Watertown on Friday afternoon, and resume league play Jan. 3 against visiting Tully. Also, the Chittenango boys volleyball team would open this week at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s annual holiday tournament.
In bowling last Wednesday, Chittenango faced Bishop Grimes at Strike-N-Spare Lanes and won 2-1 on the girls side as Ellie Knox had a 410 series and Brooke DiFlorio added a 409 series. Abbie Austin got a 374 series and Ciara Colon contributed a 366 set.
The boys bowling went 3-0 in Grimes’ favor, though, as Jake French led Chittenango, shooting a 181 game in his 421 series. Tanner King (391 series) and Nick Bailey (360 series) followed. Jeff Dargiewicz led Grimes with a 544 series and 199 high game.
Chittenango’s girls then beat Solvay 2-1 on Thursday afternoon, DiFlorio posting a high game of 185 ahead of Colon’s 157 game and Knox’s 156 game. On the boys side, Chittenango lost 3-0 to Solvay, Bailey shooting a 199 game and Angelo Falcon a 181 game.
