A busy opening month for the Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA boys swim team ended last Thursday with a 101-85 victory over New Hartford.
Things got started with Chris Bushnell, Nathan Chen, Colby Porter and Steve Sayles working together in the 200-yard medley relay, which the Red Rams won in one minute, 53.43 seconds.
Bushnell would add two more individual titles, going 1:54.78 in the 200 freestyle and then getting a victory in the 500 freestyle in 5:18.87 as Chen, in 2:22.79, beat out teammate Bobby Diel (2:26.28) to take the 200 individual medley and then won the 100 butterfly in 1:01.57.
Lucas Dekaney earned 311.60 points to beat New Hartford’s Moaz Elazzazi (287.50 points) in the diving competition. Liam Kaplan was first in the 100 backstroke in 1:06.74 and second in the 50 freestyle in 25.20 seconds.
Conlan Rourke, in 52.58 seconds, was just behind the Spartans’ Josh Geci (52.28) in the 100 freestyle and also was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.76 to New Hartford’s Gavin Schiavi (1:13.05). However, Rourke did help Bushnell, Sayles and Nate Wales win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:38.93 to the Spartans’ 1:40.12.
Two nights earlier, J-D/CBA took on Oswego, where it defeated the Buccaneers 105-78, deftly bouncing back after it took a 108-75 loss to Frontier League powerhouse Watertown the previous weekend.
Against Oswego, J-D/CBA mostly relied on its depth as it piled up second and third-place finishes to negate the fact that the Bucs won most of the individual events.
Bushnell broke that trend, going one minute, 52.55 seconds to rout the field in the 200-yard freestyle and then roaring to victory in the 100 freestyle in 50.20 seconds, with Rourke (52.10 seconds) and Porter (58.50) part of a top-three J-D/CBA sweep.
Chen beat the field in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.04, while Rourke got second place in the 50 freestyle in 24.32 seconds and Dekaney led a diving sweep, winning with 281.15 points as Evan Blust was second and Konrad Souser third.
Chen got to second place in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.44, with Wales second in the 500 freestyle in 5:33.75 and Diel second in the 200 individual medley in 2:24.62.
Oswego got two wins apiece from Casey DeLapp and J.D. Thomas as DeLapp roared to a time of 5:09.42 in the 500 freestyle and also won the 200 IM in 2:15.43, with Thomas going 23.77 seconds in the 50 freestyle and 58.59 seconds in the 100 butterfly.
All of this followed the meet with Watertown, where Bushnell went 56.24 seconds to win the 100 backstroke, Chen won the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.61 and Dekaney amassed 312.60 points in diving, but the Cyclones claimed every other event
Rourke got 23.70 seconds in the 50 freestyle for second place as Watertown went 1:35.12 in the 200 freestyle relay to top the Rams’ 1:37.82, while the Cyclones went 3:32.54 in the 400 freestyle relay and 1:44.98 to top the Rams (1:47.75) in the 200 medley relay.
Nate Carlos led Watertown on an individual basis, winning the 200 IM in 2:03.94 over Bushnell and roaring to a time of 54.46 seconds in the 100 butterfly.
Fayetteville-Manlius was back in action last Wednesday night, visiting Auburn, and the Hornets put together its third win in a row, pulling away to beat the Maroons 72-43.
Cooper Hughes, in 2:18.21, went 1-2-3 with Mike Villabila and Josh Maring in the 200 freestyle, while Lucas Wieres won the 200 IM in 2:29.48, edging Jordan Krouse (2:31.60) for that top spot.
In the 200 medley relay, Krouse, Tanner Eisenhut, Nate Montgomery and Ben Rabin got first place in 1:59.79, with Montgomery and Eisenhut returning to join Conor Mathews and Peter Pidan to go 1:47.01 in the 200 freestyle relay.
Eisenhut was second in two sprints, going 51.21 seconds in the 100 freestyle, but behind Auburn’s Sam Carbonaro (50.34) as, in the 50 freestyle, Eisenhut finished in 23.49 seconds, but Carbonaro (23.41) prevailed here, too.
