After a week spent in the state Class B rankings, the Cazenovia boys soccer team fell out, but it could get back there in a hurry.
All the Lakers had to do was upend state no. 11-ranked Marcellus last Friday at a wind-swept Sean Googin Sports Complex – and that’s exactly what happened, Cazenovia prevailing 4-2 over the Mustangs.
Going into that heavy breeze in the first half, the Lakers managed to keep it 1-1. Then, early in the second half, it had that wind advantage and pounced, Joe Spires twice scoring in the opening minutes of the half.
Another late goal sealed it, with Spires closing out a hat trick as Trey Schug picked up the other goal. Despite David Bosak and Dakota Baker scoring for the Mustangs, the Lakers improved to 6-2 at the midway point of its regular season.
Before all this, Cazenovia traveled to Jordan-Elbridge last Tuesday and, led by Schug, putting together a 4-1 victory over the Eagles.
Even with J-E goalie Keegan Ferris making 18 saves to keep things from getting out of hand, Schug broke through, scoring twice and tacking on an assist. Spires and Mack Naushad also earned goals, with Jack Aronson adding an assist.
On Thursday afternoon, Cazenovia will face Chittenango, the first of two games against the Bears in five days since they’ll play again on Oct. 1.
Chittenango also was in action last Friday, hosting Mexico and shutting out the Tigers by a 3-0 margin.
Led by Joe McIntosh, the Bears were up 2-0 by halftime and tacked on another late goal as McIntosh would score twice. Noah Hardy also converted, with Sean Larsson and Vince Cameron getting one assist apiece.
With a record of 4-3 overall after that win, Chittenango would face Homer Tuesday before its match with Cazenovia and then host Hamilton Saturday as the Lakers also take on Homer Friday before its rematch with the Bears.
