Both the Jamesville-DeWitt and East Syracuse Minoa boys tennis teams gained plenty of court time last week, with mixed amount of success against Salt City Athletic Conference Empire division foes.
In its match against Cortland last Monday afternoon, the Red Rams swept the singles on the way to defeating the Purple Tigers 5-2.
Peter Hatton got a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Brian Ngo as Eric Benaroch handled Nick Djafari 6-1, 6-3. Will Guisbond handled Justin Soler 6-0, 6-0 as Aniket Maini got a 6-0, 6-0 win over Connor Holl.
Cortland took two of the three doubles matches, one by default. But the Rams earned an extra point when Essex Glowaki and Dhruv Nanavati handled Damian Brown and Cooper Swartout 6-2, 6-0.
J-D went from there to shutting out Oswego 7-0 two days later, with the only struggle in third singles as Guisbond came from behind to beat the Buccaneers’ Zach DeMott 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Hatton and Benaroch easily won in straight sets, with Maini beating John Rice 6-3, 6-1. Anthony Pitts and Wes Sharlow got a 6-3, 7-5 doubles win over Ben Hoefer and San Liepke as the teams of Glowaki-Nanavati and Somil Aggarwal-Mark Bratslavsky lost just one game in four combined sets.
A rematch with Oswego Thursday produced a 6-1 win for J-D, with Pitts and Sharlow beaten 4-6, 6-3, 10-8, by Matt Hibbert and Drew Youngman, but the Rams sweeping everything else.
Benaroch paired with Aggarwal in doubles to blank DeMott and Nick Holland 6-0, 6-0, with Glowaki and Nanavati stopping Nick Back and Chris Colusurdo 6-1, 6-1.
Hatton won in singles, 6-0, 6-0 over Matthew Mace as did Guisbond, who beat John Rice 6-4, 6-2 as Bratslavsky took a singles turn, beating Jacob Lenahan 6-1, 6-1, while Maini handled Lucas Shepardson by those same scores.
J-D then beat Central Square 6-1 on Friday, Bratslavsky surviving Kevin Kesner 6-4, 7-5 in singles as Hatton, Guisbond and Maini won by more comfortable margins. Between them, the teams of Glowaki-Nanavati and Aggarwal-Benaroch lost just one game in four sets.
ESM met Auburn last Monday, and could not quite catch the Maroons in a 4-3 defeat, despite two singles wins.
Jack Satterly went three sets to beat Quinn Hukee 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, with Justin Cesarini beating Olecsander Colopenic 6-2, 6-4, while in doubles Ben Houseman and Jason Schad, down a set and facing a tie-breaker, came back to beat Nate Wawro and Jack Boyd 2-6, 7-6, 7-5.
Kelvin Cheng ran into Scott Minnoe and lost, 6-0, 6-0, with John Kipping taking a7-6, 6-1 loss to William Clark. In doubles, David Demazure and Bryant Pham fought hard in a 7-5, 6-4 defeat to Connor Davia and Jacob Wansor. Ben Houseman and Dan Rivers lost, 7-5, 7-6, to Jacob McIntosh and Michael Morrissey.
Yet another 4-3 defeat by ESM, this one to Mexico, involved the Spartans sweeping the doubles. Houseman and Pham rolled past Logan LaFlamm and Connor Shaffer 6-0, 6-1, as Demazure and Rivers handled Jacob Hill and Eric Hyde 6-1, 6-2.
David Griffith and Tom Kipping got past Adam Clark and Ethan Ware 6-4, 6-1, only to have the Tigers win all four singles matches. Schad did the best in fourth singles, taking a 7-5, 7-5 defeat to Matt Shaw as Cheng, Kipping and Satterly also lost in two sets.
But ESM did prevail 4-3 over Chittenango Friday, the key match coming in second singles when Kipping made a big comeback to beat Ben Cyr 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Cesarini got the other singles point, blanking Griffen Smith 6-0, 6-0. In doubles, Demazure and Rivers beat Evan Edwards and Anthony Roberts 6-1, 6-4, with Schad and Harrig beating Nate Smith and Brian Schermerhorn 7-5, 6-1.
Austin handled Kelvin Cheng 6-1, 6-0 in singles, while David Mullin shut out Devin Letterman 6-0, 6-0. Falkenburg and Lanphear survived a 6-7 (10-5), 6-3, 6-4 doubles battle with Bryant Pham and Ben Houseman. ESM won the other matches in straight sets.
Bishop Grimes finally won its first match of the season on Friday, defeating LaFayette 3-2. The key was Sean Moran’s singles comeback as, after a first-set tie-breaker, he rallied past Taylor Tummino 6-7, 6-4, 6-1.
Zed Weigand, in straight sets, earned a single point for the Cobras when he beat Brennen Thrall 7-5, 6-1. In doubles, Andrew Coleman and Harry Hu handled Brandon Benjamin and Mason Shute 6-3, 6-2.
Before that,Grimes could not pick up against a point against Homer last Monday in a 5-0 defeat. Weigand had the closest singles match, but lost 6-3, 6-1 to Alex Cottrell.. The doubles teams of Reney Breazeale- Aiden Keenan and Moran-Jason Zhang also lost in straight sets.
Another loss followed on Tuesday, Grimes unable to get a point from Chittenango in a 5-0 defeat. Wang fell 6-2, 6-3 to the Bears’ Evan Edwards as Hu fell to Anthony Roberts 6-0, 6-1 and Weigand falling to Griffen Smith 6-2, 6-1.
Grimes finally got points against Onondaga Wednesday, but still lost 3-2 to the Cobras. Wang beat Alex Wood 6-4, 6-1 and Weigand topped Taylor Featherstone 6-3, 6-4.
But Moran lost, 6-4, 6-3, to Jake Massaro, and in doubles Breazeale and Keenan, one set from the clinching point, could not hold on a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 defeat to Sophia Featherstone and Jon Massaro.
