If the Skaneateles softball team needed more proof that it wasn’t the pushover of seasons past, the events of last Monday’s game at reigning state Class B champion Solvay provided it.
Instead of a lopsided romp against the Bearcats, the Lakers made it close in the late going before taking a 6-4 defeat.
All of Solvay’s runs came in the second and third innings. Delana Thomas earned a pair of RBIs, with Aleah Yaizzo, Maya Martineau, Hannah Martineau and Izzy Lambert driving in one run apiece.
From there, though, Skaneateles pitcher Kyra Cottrill shut out the Bearcats, overcoming 11 hits and five walks to get seven strikeouts as she awaited for the Lakers’ bats to do something.
In the sixth, Skaneateles scored twice against Bearcats pitcher Izzy Lambert, and tacked on a run in the seventh to pull within two before Solvay got the final outs.
Though the comeback fell short (Lambert finished with 12 strikeouts), Lexi Cottrill still had two hits and an RBI, with Rachel Feeney and Maeve Canty also driving in runs. Kyra Cottrill scored twice as Hannah Blowers drew a pair of walks and scored a run.
It was far tougher on Thursday against rival Marcellus, with the Lakers falling 20-2 to the Mustangs.
All that Skaneateles could manage was single runs in the second and sixth innings as Canty and Feeney each got credit for an RBI, with Cottrill adding two hits. Evelyn Webster (two doubles, four RBIs) and Hannah Durand (three doubles, three RBIs) led Marcellus.
