One of the bigger tests for the Fayetteville-Manlius boys tennis team came on April 27 with a match against Baldwinsville, and while the Bees picked off some points, the Hornets still prevailed 5-2.
The key was a singles sweep for the Hornets as Riley Ma got past Antonio Marsallo 6-2, 6-2, but Taran Judge and David Fernando each won 6-0, 6-0 matches – Judge over Nick Licciardello, Fernando over Max Funicello.
Both of B’ville’s points came in doubles, where Hunter Dukat first paired with Eric Smith to beat Neil Khurana and Cary Qian 6-1, 6-1, with Dukat then joining Beckett Plumley to beat Andrew Li and Davin Woolridge 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Elsewhere in doubles, F-M had Dilan Judge and Rahul Reddy beat Anthony Pompo and Alex Taylor 6-3, 6-2, while in a similar match Rohan Dhawan and Joel Farrella handled Sam Damato and Alex Shaban 6-2, 6-3.
F-M’s 7-0 shutout of Syracuse East last Tuesday included Dilan Judge’s 6-0, 6-0 win over Tang Moan Lian, with Dhawan beating Be Aung 6-1, 6-0 and Michael Miller topping John Hso 6-0, 6-1.
Ma and Taran Judge paired in doubles to blank Hanh Duong and Samir Subba 6-0, 6-0 as the teams of Joel Farrella-Jeremy Zhang, Fernando-Max Farber-McEntee and Reddy-Victor Chen all won in two sets.
F-M kept going on Thursday with a 7-0 romp over Cicero-North Syracuse, Dhawan leading the way in singles as he beat Edwin Hirsh 6-2, 6-0. Miller beat Wyatt Dupell 6-2, 6-0 as Dilan Judge got a 6-3, 6-0 win over Ryan Hill.
Moving to doubles, Ma and Taran Judge got a chance to work together, blanking Jon and James Corl 6-0, 6-0. Chen and Neil Khurana needed three sets to beat Joe Bowen and Jack Doren 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 the teams of Farber-McEntee-Fernando and Farella-Zhang did not surrender a game in either of their matches.
Christian Brothers Academy blanked LaFayette 5-0 last Tuesday, with Dean Vlassis and Ben Vlassis each getting 6-0, 6-0 singles wins over, respectively, Hunter Martorella and Brennen Thrall.
Shivam Nanavati topped Taylor Tummino 6-0, 6-0 as the Brothers’ doubles teams of Will Holstein-Ayo Oguntola and Hunter Burton-Max Lewis also won in two sets.
Following up two days later, CBA got another 5-0 win, this one over Onondaga, again seeing Nanavati and the Vlassis brothers not drop a game in any of their singles matches. Burton and Lewis also won, 6-0, 6-0, over Sophia Featherstone and Camille Mason, with Holstein and Oguntola topping Michaela Germain and Paul Okhman 6-1, 6-1.
Manlius-Pebble Hill had its four-match win streak snapped last Monday by Mexico, the Trojans falling 3-2 to the Tigers.
Dan Mezzalingua earned a singles point, beating Evan Blunt 7-5, 6-3, while Camden Ciotoli and Keerthi Martyn beat Connor Shafer and Matt Shaw 7-5, 7-5 in doubles.
But two other matches that went to three sets went in Mexico’s favor. In singles, Dan Braverman fell to Joe Ocker 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, while in doubles J.J. Braverman and Jeff Bush had a 7-6, 2-6, 11-9 defeat to Jacob Hill and Eric Hyde.
But MPH rebounded Wednesday to top Marcellus 4-1, Dan Braverman overcoming a first-set shutout to beat Andrew Kammer 0-6, 6-1, 6-2 as Mann beat Tyler Guerrina 6-2, 6-2 and Mezzalingua shut out Chris Barbaro 6-0, 6-0.
The doubles matches were split, Ciotoli and Martyn needing three sets to beat Justin Costa and Shawn Manke 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, while Bush and Dan Braverman lost to Noah LaFever and Dan Wrona 6-4, 6-1.
Then MPH faced Cazenovia Thursday and took a 4-1 defeat to the Lakers. It took a three-set comeback by Mezzalingua to avoid the shutout as he got past Liam Flannery 4-6, 6-4, 10-4, but in a similar situation in doubles Bush and J.J. Braverman lost to Aiden Katleski and Griffin Monahan 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
