With its long break over, the Cazenovia boys tennis team was eager to find some winning form, and did so last Wednesday against LaFaytte, ignoring the summer-like heat to sweep the Lancers 5-0.
Mitch Romig, in first singles, gave the Lakers a 6-1, 6-0 win over Luke Wanlass, with Liam Flannery topping Brennen Thrall 6-1, 6-1 as C.J. Monroe got a 6-2, 6-0 win over Taylor Tummino.
Moving to doubles, Teddy Coughlin and Dan Gavilondo won again, getting past Adam McIntyre and Mason Shute 6-0, 6-2. Griffin Monahan and Jake Walburger won, 6-2, 6-0, over Travis Cruikshank and Lexi Harrington.
Facing a much tougher test on Thursday against Manlius-Pebble Hill, the Lakers easily passed it, defeating the Trojans 4-1.
In first singles, Nate Romig romped past Dan Braverman 6-1, 6-0. Flannery dropped a 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 decision to Dan Mezzlingua, but Mitch Romig won a tough 6-4, 7-5 battle with Charlie Mann.
Cazenovia also fitted in its match with Homer before the rains hit on Friday, prevailing 3-2 over the Trojans. Nate Romig blanked Vince Saraceno 6-0, 6-0, with Mitch Romig claiming a 6-1, 6-1 win over Alex Cottrell.
Flannery fell to Nate Potter 6-1, 6-4, with Coughlin and Gavilondo taking a 7-5, 6-2 defeat to Ben Herman and Spencer Rusnyiak. But the Lakers got the doubles point it needed from Monroe and Aiden Katelski, who handled Ethan Lunas and Sean Powers 6-2, 6-2.
A doubles match also went to three sets, with Cazenovia’s Aiden Kalteski and Griffin Monahan rallying to beat J.J. Braverman and Jeff Bush 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. In two sets, Coughlin and Gavilondo beat Camden Ciotoli and Keerthi Martyn 6-4, 6-2.
When it resumed action last Monday following the school break, the Chittenango boys tennis team won both doubles matches against Phoenix, but struggled in singles as it lost, 3-2, to the Firebirds.
Sean Austin and Ben Cyr gave the Bears a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Ethan Listowski and Sam Stellingwerf, with Zach Falkenburg and Matt Lanphear pairing up to handle Jeff Cooper and Alex Olschewske 6-1, 6-0.
Two of the singles matches went to three sets. Griffen Smith was two games from a clinching point, but fell 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 to Ryan Lange, with Anthony Roberts losing to Josh VanGorder 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Evan Edwards had a 6-3, 7-5 loss to Phoenix’s David Burgess.
A day later, against Skaneateles, Chittenango claimed just one match in a 4-1 defeat, from Falkenburg and Lanphear, who in doubles got past Andrew Neumann and Jack Panasci 6-4, 6-2.
Griffen and Nate Smith played two close sets in a 7-5, 7-5 loss to Max Hall and Duncan Raddant. Up in singles, Cyr lost to Jack Belinski 7-5, 6-1, with Austin falling to Dan Judge 6-2, 6-1 and Edwards having a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Nate Fouts.
Chittenango broke its skid in its own match against LaFayette on Saturday, prevailing 4-1 as, in singles, Edwards beat Thrall 6-0, 6-2 and Roberts handled Dante Friedman 6-0, 6-1, while David Mullin lost to Hunter Martorella 7-5, 6-2.
Neither of the doubles matches proved close. Falkenburg and Lanphear raced past Cruikshank and Wanlass 6-0, 6-1, with Cyr and Brian Schermerhorn pairing up to top McIntyre and Shute 6-0, 6-2.
