Boys tennis Lakers handle LaFayette, MPH

With its long break over, the Cazenovia boys tennis team was eager to find some winning form, and did so last Wednesday against LaFaytte, ignoring the summer-like heat to sweep the Lancers 5-0.

Mitch Romig, in first singles, gave the Lakers a 6-1, 6-0 win over Luke Wanlass, with Liam Flannery topping Brennen Thrall 6-1, 6-1 as C.J. Monroe got a 6-2, 6-0 win over Taylor Tummino.

Moving to doubles, Teddy Coughlin and Dan Gavilondo won again, getting past Adam McIntyre and Mason Shute 6-0, 6-2. Griffin Monahan and Jake Walburger won, 6-2, 6-0, over Travis Cruikshank and Lexi Harrington.

Facing a much tougher test on Thursday against Manlius-Pebble Hill, the Lakers easily passed it, defeating the Trojans 4-1.

In first singles, Nate Romig romped past Dan Braverman 6-1, 6-0. Flannery dropped a 4-6,  6-4, 10-4 decision to Dan Mezzlingua, but Mitch Romig won a tough 6-4, 7-5 battle with Charlie Mann.

Cazenovia also fitted in its match with Homer before the rains hit on Friday, prevailing 3-2 over the Trojans. Nate Romig blanked Vince Saraceno 6-0, 6-0, with Mitch Romig claiming a 6-1, 6-1 win over Alex Cottrell.

Flannery fell to Nate Potter 6-1, 6-4, with Coughlin and Gavilondo taking a 7-5, 6-2 defeat to Ben Herman and Spencer Rusnyiak. But the Lakers got the doubles point it needed from Monroe and Aiden Katelski, who handled Ethan Lunas and Sean Powers 6-2, 6-2.

A doubles match also went to three sets, with Cazenovia’s Aiden Kalteski and Griffin Monahan rallying to beat J.J. Braverman and Jeff Bush 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. In two sets, Coughlin and Gavilondo beat Camden Ciotoli and Keerthi Martyn 6-4, 6-2.

When it resumed action last Monday following the school break, the Chittenango boys tennis team won both doubles matches against Phoenix, but struggled in singles as it lost, 3-2, to the Firebirds.

Sean Austin and Ben Cyr gave the Bears a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Ethan Listowski and Sam Stellingwerf, with Zach Falkenburg and Matt Lanphear pairing up to handle Jeff Cooper and Alex Olschewske 6-1, 6-0.

Two of the singles matches went to three sets. Griffen Smith was two games from a clinching point, but fell 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 to Ryan Lange, with Anthony Roberts losing to Josh VanGorder 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Evan Edwards had a 6-3, 7-5 loss to Phoenix’s David Burgess.

A day later, against Skaneateles, Chittenango claimed just one match in a 4-1 defeat, from Falkenburg and Lanphear, who in doubles got past Andrew Neumann and Jack Panasci 6-4, 6-2.

Griffen and Nate Smith played two close sets in a 7-5, 7-5 loss to Max Hall and Duncan Raddant. Up in singles, Cyr lost to Jack Belinski 7-5, 6-1, with Austin falling to Dan Judge 6-2, 6-1 and Edwards having a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Nate Fouts.

Chittenango broke its skid in its own match against LaFayette on Saturday, prevailing 4-1 as, in singles, Edwards beat Thrall 6-0, 6-2 and Roberts handled Dante Friedman 6-0, 6-1, while David Mullin lost to Hunter Martorella 7-5, 6-2.

Neither of the doubles matches proved close. Falkenburg and Lanphear raced past Cruikshank and Wanlass  6-0, 6-1, with Cyr and Brian Schermerhorn pairing up to top McIntyre and Shute 6-0, 6-2.
