Before it set off on its traditional spring-break long road trip, the Baldwinsville girls lacrosse team built upon the momentum it gained from consecutive wins over Liverpool, West Genesee and Shenendehowa.
At 6-2 as the second half of its regular season got underway, the Bees traveled to Bragman Stadium last Monday afternoon and prevailed 9-7 over Cicero-North Syracuse, despite the efforts of the Northstars’ Jessica Meneilly.
A close first half saw B’ville inch in front, 5-4, by intermission, yet what kept the Bees from pulling away was Meneilly netting six of her team’s seven goals and assisting on the other, by Megan Tryniski. Brenna Duffy had two assists and Fran Tortora one assist.
Ultimately, B’ville benefited from having more than one option. Hannah Johnson had three goals, with Peyton Fleming adding two goals and two assists as Katie Pascale also scored twice. Sara Goodwin and Maria Henwood had the other goals.
Now it was time to get on the bus and head south, B’ville again testing itself against unfamiliar competition, but still flourishing.
Against Bishop Sullivan, from Virginia Beach, the Bees defeated the Crusaders 11-8, playing a superb first half as it bolted out to a 7-2 advantage, more than enough to withstand Sullivan’s late charge.
Fleming and Emma States had matching totals of three goals and one assist. Johnson found the net twice, with Pascale and Goodwin both earning one goal and one assist. Monica Lannier also had a goal as Molly Merryweather earned six saves.
Once it returns from Virginia, B’ville gets a second shot Tuesday at a Fayetteville-Manlius team it lost to in a wild 16-13 battle in mid-April, with the Bees visiting Ithaca on Saturday.
