Having dealt with a string of weather-related postponements, the Liverpool boys tennis team has tried to fit in as much as possible.
And when it cleared out in time for Friday’s match against rival Cicero-North Syracuse, the Warriors were ready for it, enough to pull out a 4-3 decision over the Northstars.
Of the three singles matches, two went in Liverpool’s favor. Brandon Davis won a 6-4, 6-4 decision over James Corl, while Caleb Munski got past Edwin Hirsh 6-3, 6-4. C-NS got on the board in third singles as Wyatt Dupell, in three sets, got past Aaron Alejo 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
The doubles matches were split. For the Northstars, Jon Corl and Brandon Millias rallied to top Andrew Johnson and Jeff Noll 6-7 (7-4), 6-4, 6-3, while Joe Bowen and Josh Matyasik also needed three sets to beat Caleb Arnold and Aiden Barbour 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
Still, Liverpool earned the two points it needed, one with ease as Ben White and Filipo Valenti shut out Kyle Bulko and Evan Harberek 6-0, 6-0, the other with a big comeback from Braydon Cabrey and Jon Kline, who got blanked in the first set, yet still pulled out a 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Ryan Gallagher and Ryan Hill.
Before this, the Warriors faced Homer last Wednesday afternoon, where it only earned a single point in a 5-1 defeat to the Trojans.
It came from doubles, where Cabrey and Kline worked together for Liverpool and, coming from behind, pulled out a third-set tie-breaker to beat Homer’s Conner Lake and Ethan Lunas 2-6, 6-4, 7-6.
Two of the singles matches went to three sets. Davis lost, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, to Ben Herman, while Munski also claimed the middle set but fell to Vincenzo Saraceno 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
In other singles action, Anthony Puma lost, 6-0, 6-0, to Alex Cottrell, with Valenti and Devon White falling to Nate Potter and Spencer Rusyniak 6-1, 6-2. Johnson and Noll battled hard, but lost to Adam Brown and Sean Powers 7-5, 7-6.
C-NS got to play in sunny conditions on Saturday against visiting West Genesee, yet could only manage a single point in a 6-1 defeat to the Wildcats.
Dupell got that lone Northstars point in singles when he defeated Noah Ruston 6-4, 7-6, but Hirsh fell to Matt Mannara 6-1, 6-1 as James Corl had a 6-2, 6-1 loss to James Plunkett.
Bulko, paired with Haberek, lost to Stefan Atanasov and John Northrop 6-1, 6-4, with Millias and Jon Corl a bit more competitive in a 7-5, 6-2 defeat to Ryan Joyce and Erik Shanahan.
Elsewhere in doubles, Gallagher and Hill lost, 6-3, 6-3, to Max Mekker and Michael White. Bowen paired with Jack Doren this time, lost to Carter McCrea and Anthony DeLorenzo 6-1, 6-3.
