Put together depth and versatility, and no one was going to catch the Jamesville-DeWitt indoor track and field teams in their twin pursuits of Section III Class A championships.
In a meet Wednesday night at SRC Arena delayed from Feb. 7 due to winter weather, the boys Red Rams picked up 177 points to pull away from runner-up New Hartford (103 points) as East Syracuse Minoa finished third with 60 points.
In a 1-2 sweep of the 55-meter dash, Joey Armenta, in 6.81 seconds, beat out David Fikhman (6.90) as Murad Amurlayev was fifth and ESM’s Myles Riggins got sixth place.
Fikhman won the 300-meter dash in 36.66 seconds as Armenta (37.73) and Mike Potamianos (38.28) completed a top-three sweep and Josh Duby was fifth. Amurlayev returned in the 4×200 relay, joining Haberle Conlon, Nico Stella and Juan Smith as J-D prevailed in 1:38.81 and ESM settled for fifth place.
Potamianos took his turn at the top in the 600-meter run, winning in 1:28.16 with Fidel Martinez fourth in 1:30.61. Then, in the 55-meter hurdles, Alex Carbacio won in 8.38 seconds over Fulton’s Caleb Clarke (8.41) as Riggins was third in 8.45 seconds.
In field events, J-D’s Brendan Sharon claimed the pole vault by clearing 10 feet 6 inches before Amurlayev, competing in the long jump, won with 20’8″ as Donavon Coughlin (19’5″) gained fourth place. Coughlin, with a triple jump of 39 feet, topped Liam McFadden (36’10”) and Lear Wang (36’9 1/2″) for third place.
Armenta, Duby, Stella and Joe Staples won a dramatic 4×400 relay, edging Auburn by one-hundredth of a second, 3:49.04 to the Maroons’ 3:49.05 as ESM got fourth place in 3:54.39. J-D took third in the 4×800 relay in 9:09.25, with ESM sixth.
Nick Mannion was second in the mile in 5:04.31, with Ahviere Reese third. Alan Gao (10:46.82) beat out John DiDomenico (10:50.37) for third place in the 3,200-meter run. Carbacio was fourth in the high jump, clearing 5’4″ as Everett Moss got sixth place.
ESM got a sweep in the shot put thanks to Gavin Stevens, who heaved it 36’4 1/4″ to beat teammate Elijah Buck (35’7 3/4″) as J-D’s Kellen Mulvihill was fifth. Buck got second place in the weight throw with 44’4 1/2″ as Devin Harrigan (31’10 3/4″) was fourth.
Also for the Spartans, Nick Berg was second in the 1,000-meter run in 2:46.12, beating Sam Glisson (2:48.65) in third place as Josh Hillers was fifth.
It was even more lopsided in the girls sectional Class A meet, where J-D had 192 points and ESM, with 66 points, again had a third-place showing behind New Hartford’s 78 points.
Again winning multiple times, Alexandria Payne tore through the 55 hurdles in 8.65 seconds, a full second clear of ESM’s Mackenzie Bourdon (9.65 seconds) as Monica Hernandez-Olivera was third in 9.90 seconds.
Payne also won the 300 in 44.40 seconds, with Jenna VanVranken fourth and Eva Wisniewski fifth. In the 4×200, Payne, Denise Yaeger, Katie Lutz and Ana Dieroff won in 1:50.35.
Sophia Vinciguerra needed 3:21.42 to prevail in the 1,000 over ESM’s Kassandra Burr, who was second in 3:28.36 as Kathryn Sizing was fifth and the Spartans’ Melanie DeFeo sixth. Marissa Drogo was sixth in the 600 and Aaliya Piquet sixth in the 55 hurdles.
Moving to the 1,500-meter run, Vinciguerra won again, in 5:03.61, this time seeing Abby Palin get third place in 5;30.66 as Abby Leavitt (5:36.50) was fourth. Palin, Sizing, Madeline Foss and Anna Sofia Hege joined up to win the 4×800 in 11:22.95.
Foss won the 3,000-meter run in 11:01.91, with Ayla Erwin third in 12:08.89. In the 600, Ana Dieroff prevailed in 1:40.16, with Grace Bridge (1:45.34) topping Katie Lutz (1:49.74) for fourth place.
Yaeger had a winning long jump of 16’4 3/4″ as Amber Hamernik was third with 15’4″. Yaeger also finished second in the 55 sprint in 7.81 seconds.
ESM got Lashae Benjamin in third place in the 55 sprint in 7.84 seconds and Mia Montgomery was fifth in 8.01 seconds. J-D’s Anna Ferrick was sixth. J-D also took second place in the 4×400 relay in 4:42.99 behind Auburn’s 4:41.79.
Wisniewski got her title in the pole vault, clearing 7’6″, while Laetticia Bazile topped 5 feet and won the high jump over ESM’s Jennah Ferrari, who was second by topping 4:10. Marianah Williams had a winning shot put toss of 31’5″, the only throw past 30 feet.
But the Spartans did win the triple jump thanks to Montgomery, whose top attempt of 34’4″ was nearly two feet ahead of Oswego’s Rose Huang (32’9 1/4″) as J-D had Allison Virgo take third place with 31’7 1/2″ and Maria Markert was sixth.
ESM had DeFeo, Burr, Katherine Jacobs and Selena Malcolm take third place in the 4×800 in 11:37.90, with Bourdon, Benjamin, Piquet and Caitlynn Finerson third in the 4×200 in 1:58.06.
Meanwhile, in the Class B-2 sectional meet, Christian Brothers Academy’s girls finished seventh and boys in ninth place.
In the girls 600, CBA’s Olivia Morganti was second in 1:42.12, with Cory Knox sixth as Morganti also got sixth place in the 300. Knox, Julia Medicis, Annie Toole and Marni Rathbun were fourth in the 4×800 in 11:39.16.
Bri Pucci got third place in the 1,500 in 5:14.20. Zach Medicis was second in the boys 600 in 2:53.83, with Lewes Kunda fifth in the 55 sprint.
