All of the seniors on the West Genesee boys swim received their accolades prior to last Tuesday night’s regular-season finale against Pulaski-Sandy Creek.
And the Wildcats made the occasion a happy one, prevailing by a score of 90-85 to complete a 9-3 run that left them trailing only Liverpool in the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division standings.
WG clinched the meet with three races to go, making the final margin far smaller than it played out. To get started, three seniors – Zac Zoanetti, Connor Macko and Evan Yeager, joined Alex Shuron to win the 200-yard medley relay in one minute, 57.90 seconds.
Zoanetti would also beat the field in the 200 individual medley in 2:27.38 as Shuron, in the 100 butterfly, prevailed in 1:00.44, with Cameron Chao second in 1:07.32.
Matt Shoults tore to a time of 52.04 seconds in the 100 freestyle, with Ryan McMahon winning the 500 freestyle in 5:25.62. Mike Whitney went 2:07.40 to prevail in the 200 freestyle as Jacob DiBlase had the quickest time of 1:12.63 in the 100 backstroke.
Justin Byrne piled up 240.25 points in diving to beat out David Puma (227.40 points) and Adriel Schoeck (175.50 points) in a 1-2-3 WG finish.
Macko, Tiernan Guy, Caleb Szewczyk and James Raymonda swam the 200 freestyle relay in 1:45.49 as Shoults, Whitney, Raymonda and Mateusz Lata finished it off with a time of 3:58.77 in the 400 freestyle relay.
Now the Wildcats would work for two full weeks before the Feb. 14 Section III Class A championships at Nottingham, though sectional diving events take place this Saturday (Class A) and on Feb. 14 (state qualifier).
