With its convincing victory over Pittsford Mendon Jan. 27 in a rematch of the 2017 state Class A final, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls basketball team firmly established its place atop the state Class A rankings.
As a follow-up, the Red Rams rolled past East Syracuse Minoa 80-25 last Tuesday night, scoring 31 points in the first quarter alone and continuing to add to that margin as Momo LaClair’s 16 points included four 3-pointers.
Gabby Stickle had 15 points, with Meg Hair getting 13 points and Jamie Boeheim adding 10 points. Paige Keeler and Kasey Vaughan each had eight point as, for the Spartans, Angelina Thomason put up 12 points.
It was much the same in Friday night’s 79-19 win over Cortland as J-D outscored the Purple Tigers 24-1 in the first quarter and went from there.
So balanced were the Rams that nine different players scored at least seven points, but none had more than Keeler’s total of 13 points. Vaughan had 10 points, with Andrea Sumida getting nine points. Boeheim, Hair and Sydney Baker had eight points apiece as LaClair, Stickle and Noura El-Hindi all finished with seven points.
For Bishop Grimes, who has faced one of Central New York’s toughest schedules, the tests kept coming last Monday with a visit from state-ranked Westhill that was close most of the way, but still resulted in a 59-51 defeat to the Warriors.
The first quarter proved costly to the Cobras, who saw Westhill get hot from the field and grab a 23-14 advantage. The rest of the game was played on even terms, with the Warriors answering every time Grimes tried to get close.
Brianna Squier led her side with 17 points. Lora Marial had 10 points, with Jenna Sloan adding nine points and Maria Naylor getting eight points. Four Westhill players – Mackenzie Martin (19 points), Katelyn Karleski (12 points), Jenna Larrabee (11 points) and Morgan Elmer (10 points) – scored in double figures.
Christian Brothers Academy rolled last Tuesday to a 62-33 victory over Jordan-Elbridge, dominating the first half as it built a 33-10 edge on the Eagles.
Brooke Jarvis, fresh off her 39-point effort in a loss to Homer Jan. 27, had to do far less work this time, finishing with 13 points, a number Maura Claire Conan matched by hitting three 3-pointers. Olivia Carni had 11 points as Skye Ryan got nine points.
Then, on Friday night, Grimes and CBA went head-to-head, and a big push in the game’s middle stages turned things in the Cobras’ favor as it pulled away and beat the Brothers 64-46.
The second quarter started with CBA in front 12-10, but Grimes grabbed the lead by halftime and then, in the third quarter, shut down the Brothers, turning mistakes into baskets and rendering a decisive 17-4 run.
Abby Wilkinson hit three 3-pointers and got 19 points overall, leading Grimes as Squier got 15 points and Naylor chimed in with 14 points. Sarah Snavlin had six points as Jarvis got 14 points for CBA, with Carni and Conan adding 10 points apiece.
Fayetteville-Manlius went to Henninger last Tuesday and prevailed 54-42, the key to it a first half where the Hornets gained a 29-15 advantage, something the Black Knights could not overcome.
Lexie Roe hit on three 3-pointers and paced F-M with 17 points overall. Lexy Gray was close behind, getting 14 points as Lily Fish and Rebecca Sherwood had six points apiece. Henninger got 15 points from Gjina Lewis and 12 points from Tanyea Jansson.
ESM would take a 36-30 defeat to Onondaga last Thursday, unable to hold on to a 16-14 halftime lead despite Holly Carr’s 12 points. Avi Baker (12 points, eight rebounds) and Shona Jackson (15 rebounds, seven points) paced the Tigers.
The Spartans then lost 55-19 to Auburn on Friday night as bad weather kept Baldwinsville from traveling to F-M. That game will get made up this Saturday.
