It could hardly have gone better for the pair of Westhill indoor track and field teams when they trekked up to SRC Arena for last Wednesday’s Onondaga High School League Division I championships.
The girls Warriors earned 159 points to easily claim the league title as Cazenovia (106 points) finished second, while in the boys OHSL meet Westhill earned 134.5 points, again with Cazenovia (91 points) in the runner-up spot.
Nearly getting a relay sweep, the Westhill girls had Ashley Bolesh, Reilly Geer, Angie Mesa-Espinosa and Molly Bobbett take the 4×400 in four minutes, 33.44 seconds.
Bolesh, Mesa-Espinosa, Ashley Heffernan and Megan O’Reilly won the 4×200 relay in a thriller, the Warriors, in 1:56.90, edging Cazenovia (1:56.91) by one-hundredth of a second.
Only in the 4×800 did the Warriors not prevail as Maura McAnaney, Kendra MacCaull, Mackenzie Powers and Katherine Evans were second in 10:58.65 to Chittenango’s winning 10:50.85.
Haylei Coolican stepped up to win the 1,000-meter run in 3:12.30 and added a second title in the 1,500-meter run in 5:14.58 as Kylie Nowicki was second in 5:23 flat. Liz Kessler won the 3,000-meter run in 11:21.32, with Alaina Kenny getting third place in 12:07.22.
Westhill recorded a sweep in the 55-meter hurdles. Alyssa Holstein won in 9.44 seconds, with Lauren Marshall second in 9.70 seconds as Quinn Mannion (9.98) got fifth place.
In the high jump, Abby Feyerabend won, clearing 4 feet 8 inches, while in the pole vault the Warriors saw Noelle Coolican clear 9’6” to win and Heffernan finish second, topping 8’6”.
Marshall went 30’5 ¾” in the triple jump to get second place. Bolesh was third in the long jump, going 14’ ¼” as Caitlin McIntyre got sixth place.
Maura McNaney was sixth in the 600-meter run in 1:47.34 as Kendra MacCaull (1:51.95) took fifth place. Holstein was sixth in the 55-meter dash, with McIntyre seventh as Kennedy Rose and Molly Bobbett were sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 300-meter dash
As for other local teams in the OHSL Division I meet, Solvay emerged from a crowd of teams to finish third in the girls event with 41 points behind Westhill and Cazenovia, while Marcellus had 18 points for ninth place.
The Bearcats’ Ashley Bosco again swept the throwing events, tossing the shot put 39’11 ¼” as Westhill’s Lennah Abraham was third (27’8 ½”) and Solvay’s Sabrina Garnett was fourth (26’3 ½”).
Then, in the weight throw, Bosco heaved it 37’3” to beat out Westhill’s Bella Lavigne, who was second with 34’8”. Garnett was third with a throw of 31’1”. Isabella Lambert was third in the triple jump, going 30’5 ½” as Kyra Crossett tied for fourth in the high jump and was sixth in the 55 hurdles.
Nearly half the points from Marcellus came from having Caroline Trytek, Alaura Cushman, Delaney Manahan and Emma Holzwrth take second place in the 4×400 in 4:40.17 behind Westhill.
That same Mustangs quartet got fourth place in the 4×200 in 2:01.73 as Sophia Shaw tied Crossett for fourth in the high jump and Courtney Otis shared fifth place in the pole vault with Solvay’s Erica Bagozzi.
Westhill’s Ben Eassa won twice for the boys Warriors. In the long jump, Eassa had a top leap of 19’5 ¼”, and in the triple jump he flew 40’8” as no one else broke the 40-foot mark.
On the oval, Westhill won the 4×400 as Connor Schwartz, Wyatt Lavigne, Cade Van Ornam and Cal Niezabytowski posted 3:55.57. Van Ornam was third in the 600 in 1:37.86, with Niezabytowski fourth in 1:38.42 and Mike Ferrara (1:39.81) sixth.
Tom Howard, in 37.90 seconds, beat the field by more than a second in the 300 sprint, and also was third in the 55 sprint in 7.02 seconds. Howard paired with Schwartz, Niezabytowski and Evan Watt to go 1:39.44 and win the 4×200.
To win the pole vault, Watt cleared 12 feet, while Eassa was second, topping 11 feet. Also, Watt needed 8.64 seconds to take second place in the 55-meter hurdles.
Evan Ballard, with a toss of 39’4 ½”, was second in the weight throw as Ben Helfeld was fourth (36’11 ½”), while Ballard took third place in the shot put with a throw of 43’3 ½”. Mike Laszlo was fifth in the high jump.
Jake Suddaby took third place in the 3,200-meter run in 10:22.91, while Brendan Rewakowski was third in the 1,000 in 2:48.81 as Angelo Carr was sixth in 2:59.60. Rewakowski, Suddaby, Van Ornam and Jacob Fricano were second (9:21.91) to Homer (8:41.70) in the 4×800.
Marcellus (26 points) did finish ahead of Solvay (19.5 points) in the boys OHSL Division I standings, with Ethan Mosure taking second place in the mile in 4:45.55, just behind Mexico’s Kyle Higby (4:45.26) at the line. Rewakowski finished seventh for Westhill.
Luke Norstad, with aweigh throw of 39’3 ½”, got third place, and he was fourth (42’11) in the shot put. Joe Riccardi was sixth in the 3,200, with Ryan White seventh in the 55 sprint. White, Brayton Johnson, Zhengduo Dai and Max McAuliff were fifth in the 4×200 in 1:50.65 as Johnson was fourth in the high jump.
Solvay had Dylon Ewers finish third in the triple jump, going 38’6 ½”, and clear 5’8” for third place in the high jump.
Justice Shirley, Trevor Lee, Isaiah Barr and Tyler McCarthy finished fifth for the Bearcats in the 4×400 in 4:25.79. Shane Spinner was fifth in the shot put Max Melnyk was sixth in the 55 hurdles in 10.11 seconds, with Dylon Ewers seventh in the long jump.
