It’s rare to have any boys swim meet end with the two opposing sides picking up the same number of points.
Yet that’s what happened last Tuesday night when Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA took its 6-0 record to Mexico, where a 10-point lead disappeared in the final race for the Red Rams, leading to a 93-93 decision.
In that closing race, the 400-yard freestyle relay, J-D’s quartet of Nathan Chen, Conlan Rourke, Peter Hatton and Kaleel Boykins had a time of three minutes, 48.83 seconds, but the Tigers got first in 3:40.85 and also second place in 3:48.27 to make up the points.
Less than a second separated the Rams from a 7-0 record, which came after a split of the previous two relays. J-D/CBA had won the 200 medley when Dhen, Spencer Schultz, Owen Farchione and Chris Bushnell posted 1:43.88, but Mexico won the 200 freestyle in 1:34.52 to the Rams’ 1:40.47.
Bushnell still won twice, going 2:05.64 to take the 200 individual medley and 55.94 seconds to claim the 100 backstroke. Schultz roared through the 100 butterfly in 55.41 seconds as Rourke won the 100 freestyle in 54.12 seconds.
J-D/CBA went 1-2 in diving as Ryan Evans got 296.70 points and Lucas Dekaney, with 257.05 points, snared the runner-up spot. It helped Mexico to sweep the top three spots in the 500 freestyle and have John Ocker, in 23.73 seconds, edge Farchione (23.74) by one-hundredth of a second in the 50 freestyle. Rourke was second in the 200 freestyle and Schultz second to Ocker in the 100 breaststroke.
Meanwhile, Fayetteville-Manlius was gearing up for its showdown against J-D/CBA, the Hornets traveling to Oswego and putting together a 92-77 victoty over the Buccaneers.
Early wins came from Nico Foster, who in 25.59 seconds edged Nico Araujo (26.00 seconds) in the 50 freestyle, and Lucas Wieres, who swam the 100 butterfly in 1:07.06.
Later in the meet, Jordan Krouse, in 1:06.58, beat Richard Wan (1:09.68) in the 100 breaststroke, with Krouse also second in the 500 freestyle in 5:58.95) as Miguel Aldana (5:50.19) won for the Hornets.
Wan was second in the 200 IM, with Aldana second in the 200 freestyle and Eric Bang second in the 100 butterfly. Chris Ziobro had the fastest time of 1:06.22 in the 100 breaststroke.
Weather kept F-M and J-D/CBA from meeting face-to-face last Friday night at Cazenovia College. The Hornets would host Mexico Wednesday as the Red Rams have its big showdown with Liverpool.
