The rash of area high school wrestling meets postponed, and then moved to later in the season, by bad winter weather has meant some long lulls for some teams.
East Syracuse Minoa had one of them, but it only lasted until last Monday’s match against Oswego, where the Spartans pulled away to defeat the Buccaneers 57-20.
Seven different ESM wrestlers earned pins, the fastest going to Ameer Ladd at 220 pounds as he finished off Tyler Shoults in 65 seconds. Ali Abdulla, at 160 pounds, wasn’t far behind, with an 80-second fall over Cody Vincent.
Bennett Ferrari (138 pounds) took 2:42 to pin Seth Perrin as Casey O’Donnell (126 pounds) also had a second-period fall over Ben Spedding, but the other pins took place in the third period.
Garren Kuney, at 152 pounds, needed just 23 seconds of the third period to pin Jesse Young, with Donovan Marriott (120 pounds) pinning Trey Seguin in 4:50. Just seven seconds remained in the 145-pound bout when Xavier Lowery pinned Hugh Randell.
Only once did ESM win with something other than a pin as Aslan Abdulla, at 170 pounds, outlasted Mason Cass 13-10. Dakota Allen (106 pounds) and Alex Leo (113 pounds) both claimed forfeits.
Two days later, ESM won again, this time handling Cortland 63-22 as four bouts were forfeited by the Purple Tigers to Ladd, Logan Cowell (285 pounds), Casey O’Donnell (126 pounds) and Matt Lewis (182 pounds).
Ali Abdulla, in the opening bout at 160, pinned Tyler Gavitt in 32 seconds. By contrast, Andrew Crone (195 pounds) needed to go to overtime, where a takedown beat Brandon McClendon 3-1.
Later in the match, Leo pinned Gildon case in the second period and Marriott needed just 48 seconds to pin Noah Ryan. Ferrari, with a 99-second pin of Giovanni Cinguanti, began a closing stretch where Lowery pinned Noah Wurst in three minutes and Kuney, in one fewer second than Lowery, gained a fall over Jarrod Bush.
Fayetteville-Manlius was back on the mat last Wednesday, facing Cicero-North Syracuse, where it took a 45-34 defeat to the Northstars.
The Hornets led 9-0 after two bouts as Alex Dauksza opened at 160 with a third-period fall over Jacob Nobles and James Ferro (170 pounds) edged Robert Salvett 8-6.
Two C-NS pins followed, but then Charlie Josephson (220) pinned Troyan Jones early in the third period and Andrew Testani (285) took just 66 seconds to pin Brady Ramos.
That gave the Hornets a 21-12 lead, but C-NS claimed three forfeits and a pin to move in front for good, only broken up by Braden Florczyk’s impressive 9-3 win over Dario Cicarelli at 113. Late in the match, Justin Bedell (138) earned a last-minute pin over Josh Brighton and Ali Salem (145) shut out Isiah Wahdan 10-0.
F-M went from there to earning a fifth-place finish in a 16-team field at Sunday’s Cazenovia Invitational, earning 125.5 points as Indian River (169.5 points) topped Carthage (157 points) for the team title.
Testani reached the finals at 285, only to take a 5-1 defeat to Rome Free Academy’s Spencer Pisaneschi. At 160, Ferro also reached the championship round before RFA’s Marc Darcangelo pinned him
Florczyk edged Cazenovia’s Jacob Wells 4-3 for third place at 113, with Bedell getting third place at 132 and Josephson doing the same at 220 with a pin of Carthage’s Devin Grove. John Scalzetti edged Homer’s Matt McUmber 2-1 for fifth place at 126.
