With its match last Monday against visiting Carthage, the East Syracuse Minoa girls volleyball team had an opportunity to end the Comets’ 65-match win streak.
And when the Spartans won the opening set with an impressive 25-19 effort, things looked good. But all that did was wake up Carthage, as ESM soon found out.
The Comets won the next two sets by lopsided margins of 25-10 and 25-5, rarely making any mistakes. To its credit, the Spartans were strong in the fourth set, nearly prolonging the battle, but Carthage closed out the match 25-21.
Shaina Brilbeck had 12 assists, helping IsabellaTalarico on the front line as Talarico got 11 assists. Aubrie Williams had 12 kills, with Gillianne McCarthy and Riley Abbot each getting six kills as Brilbeck and Kat Boland had two aces apiece. Franchesca Polcaro and Arrica Williams both had three digs.
ESM played again Thursday night, at Oneida, but turned it around to gets its own four-set win, claiming the opener 25-19 and overcoming a 25-10 loss in the second set to beat the Indians 25-10 and 25-18 in the next two sets.
Talarico finished with 20 assists, adding eight digs and three aces. Polcaro not only had seven kills, she earned 10 digs as McCarthy contributed six kills. Abbot had eight digs and four kills as Aubrie Williams earned three aces and three kills.
Christian Brothers Academy was home Thursday night to take on Fabius-Pompey. It went the full distance, with the Brothers twice surrendering leads, but pulling it out in five sets over the Falcons.
After an easy 25-15 win in the first set, CBA dropped the second set 25-19. Each of the next two sets went beyond the point limit, and the Brothers won the third 26-24, only to see the Falcons, two points from defeat, pull out the fourth set by that same margin.
But CBA would prevail 25-18 in the decisive set as Anna Jenkins got 10 assists, nine digs and six aces. Catherine Burns had eight kills, eight aces and eight digs as Logan Congel got seven kills. Delaney Della Donna put together seven kills, six digs and three aces as Kristen DeLorenzo augmented her nine digs with four aces and two kills.
Back on Wednesday night, Manlius-Pebble Hill paid a visit to undefeated Chittenango, who still had not lost a set all season. The Bears prevailed 25-14over the Trojans in the first and third set, with a 25-4 second set in between.
Ren Brown still gave MPH 12 assists, with Anna Szombathy getting seven digs and Liza Bruno earning five digs. Emma Purce had four digs as Halle Erwin and Phoebe Ambron got two kills apiece. Chittenango had 14 kills from Tyla Cutrie, 11 kills from Megan Mayer and 15 assists from Tiffany Scofield.
