More than a week removed from a 10-0 defeat to Syracuse, the Liverpool ice hockey team was eager to get going again.
The Warriors faced Watertown IHC last Friday night at Lysander Ice Arena and trailed in the third period before staging a comeback to beat the Cavaliers 6-5 in overtime.
Again, Liverpool’s defense would face difficulties as IHC inched in front, 2-1, by the end of the first period. They traded goals until the Warriors, still behind in the third period, caught up to force OT, and then pulled it out.
All through the game, Bobby Welch and Carson Ferguson carried the attack, each of them scoring twice and assisting on the other four scoring plays as Pat Langlois had the other two goals. Connor Boland added an assist.
For IHC, Carson Schuldt (two goals) and Jon Monnat (one goal, two assists) led a well-balanced attack. Liverpool goaltenders Gavin Buza and Sebastian Jesmore combined for 35 saves.
While that was going on, Cicero-North Syracuse was taking its shot at undefeated, state Division I no. 3-ranked West Genesee at Shove Park, but unable to get on the board in a 3-0 loss to the Wildcats.
WG took 15 shots in the first period, only to see them all stopped by C-NS goalie Jack Doren. It wasn’t until the 6:11 mark of the second period that WG put one past Doren as Dan Colabufo got the goal, assisted by Patrick McDonald.
Even more important was Timmy Winn’s goal right before the second period ended. That gave the Wildcats a 2-0 cushion and a bit less stress for the third period, where Holzhauer found the net.
None of the Northstars’ 15 shots got past Procopio as Doren finished his night with 32 saves.
On Thursday night, C-NS and Liverpool meet each other for the only time in the regular season at Lysander, this after the Northstars took on Rome Free Academy Monday and the Warriors went to Fulton on Tuesday.
