High school wrestling is underway again, with Liverpool sweeping its first big meet of the season and Cicero-North Syracuse playing host to its annual Bill Andersen Memorial Tournament.
Going to the Dominic Disisato Duals at Poland, the Warriors would win all five matches on the card and take the tournament, beating out South Lewis and Mount Markham, who both had 4-1 marks.
Liverpool didn’t face Mount Markham, but did handle South Lewis 51-21 in a match that turned when Jacob Ianno, at 120 pounds, edged Cody Greene 2-1 before Jeremy Ianno (126 pounds) shut out Dylan Vosburgh 7-0.
From there, Kenny Haugabook (138 pounds), Anthony Piscatelli (152 pounds) and Josh Hemingway (160 pounds) each earned pins, this following an early pin by Ron Cyr (182 pounds) and forfeits to Hayley Delia (99 pounds), Corey Okun (106 pounds) and Tim Young (113 pounds).
To start the duals, Liverpool handled host Poland 70-18, dropping the first two bouts but then claiming 12 of 13. Cyr, Carmen Sheldon (195 pounds), John Sturtz (220 pounds) and Justin Haynes (285 pounds) swept the higher weight classes with pins as Jacob Ianno, Charlie Tran (126 pounds) and Steve Pascarella (132 pounds) also got falls.
In beating Cooperstown 66-21, the Warriors mostly counted on forfeits, though Hemingway, Sheldon, Sturtz and Zach Allen (160 pounds) got pins. What followed were lopsided wins over Little Falls (67-10) and Watertown (73-9) as Jacob Ianno was named his team’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.
Meanwhile, C-NS was again conducting the Andersen Tournament, with 19 teams competing. The Northstars, now under the guidance of new head coach David Wise, finished sixth with 103 points as Fulton (238.5 points) topped Spencerport (222.5 points) for the team title.
C-NS managed this without any of its wrestlers getting to the finals. Instead, it accumulated place finishes, including at 106 where Dario Cicciarelli pinned Najuan Williams (South Jefferson/Sandy Creek) for third place and Dan Sweeney was seventh.
Harrison Portorsnok went 2-2 to finish fourth at 99, while Nathan Osborne was fourth at 126 with a 3-2 record. Anthony Desimone got to sixth place at 160 as Julian Zavaglia was seventh at 182 and Mike Levesay was eighth at 152. Toryan Jones was eighth at 220.
In its first head-to-head meet of the season, C-NS visits Whitesboro Thursday night, this after Liverpool took on East Syracuse Minoa Tuesday and before the Warriors go to Saturday’s Batavia Christmas Tournament. The Blindmen’s JV Tournament takes place this Saturday at C-NS.
