Central New York is in the midst of a period where most of the bowling world will squarely focus on this area.
From the U.S. Open staged last month at Flamingo Bowl to the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships next year at the OnCenter, thousands of top bowlers are battling for high stakes here.
It’s no different in high school bowling, since Syracuse will host the state championship tournament next March just before the USBC takes over.
Liverpool got the high school season started in a big way, venturing to Bowl-Mor Lanes and defeating East Syracuse Minoa last Monday in a pair of 2-1 decisions.
ESM is a new opponent as part of the expanded league schedule in the Salt City Athletic Conference, and the boys Warriors took off with Zac Ormsby shooting a 701 series that included a 246 high game. That, plus Devin Roberson’s 599 series (224 high game), helped overcome the 727 set from the Spartans’ Ryan MacCombie.
Meanwhile, in the girls match, Liverpool’s Dominique Cimini shot a 538 series and 209 high game, with Dailyn McCarthy getting a 203 game during her 534 set. Haley Youker paced ESM with a 549 series.
C-NS started a day later, visiting Auburn and earning its own set of victories over the Maroons, each of them 3-0 shutouts.
Kaitlin Antineli led the girls Northstars, putting together a 634 series that included a 234 high game. Elianna Pitts managed a 224 game in her 531 set as Carly Lescenski gained a 487 series (180 high game) and Trinity Drodz had a 437 series.
No C-NS boys player matched Antineli’s total, though Zach Emm had a steady 607 series with no game better than 219. J.J. O’Connell’s 222 game led to a 565 set as Nick Bough got a 553 series. Kyle Patterson shot a 215 game and Landon Spingler posted a 200.
When Liverpool faced Auburn on Thursday afternoon at Flamingo, it swept that match, too, with the big story coming in the girls 3-0 win where Ashley Hardy, on her home lanes, set a career mark with a 726 series that included a high game of 256.
McCarthy had a 535 series (209 high game) as Danielle Maher got a 202 game in her 517 set and Cimini added a 504 series. Auburn’s Kaylee Hodson notched a 578 series.
No one on the Liverpool boys side could match Hardy’s totals, but in a 3-0 sweep of Auburn five different Warriors easily surpassed 600 series, an impressive display of roster depth.
Ormsby led with a 672 set, with Brandon Davis shooting a 661 series (237 high game) and Josh Winzens posting a 245 game on his way to a 660 series. Devin Roberson, with a 627 series, edged out the 610 total from Deacon Roberson that included a 235 game.
During this week’s busy slate, C-NS would have its own match against ESM, plus contests against Fulton and Cortland at Strike-N-Spare Lanes.
