Twice in a span of nine days, the West Genesee girls swim team got an up-close look at the top side in the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division.
The Wildcats first met Fayetteville-Manlius in a head-to-head meet Oct. 6 at Cazenovia College, the Hornets’ home pool, and got overwhelmed by F-M’s depth before making up points late in a 93-86 defeat.
WG’s Maddie Zapisek did pick up a victory in the 200-yard freestyle where, in two minutes, 4.35 seconds, she edged out the Hornets’ Hannah Kellogg (2:04.47) by 0.12 seconds.
Later, in the 500 freestyle, Zapisek, in 5:37.62, finished second behind the Hornets’ Lindsay Mathews (5:32.44), one of many runner-up finishes for the Wildcats in this meet.
Hannah Jasinski swam the 200 individual medley in 2:33.17 to get second place, with Hannah Murdoch doing the same in the 50 freestyle in 27.47 seconds. Jasinki, in 1:07.44, was just behind Addie Antshel (1:05.44) in the 100 butterfly.
Kathleen Draveck had 169.10 points on the diving board, finishing second to Alessandra Manicone (187.30 points). Zapisek, Murdoch, Morgan Cappon and Anna Ivery swam the 200 freestyle relay in 1:50.47 as F-M posted 1:46.57.
Maggie Smith, swimming in the 100 backstroke, finished in a time of 1:15.47. Haley Hagadorn got second place in the 100 breaststroke in 1:18.68.
From there, WG went on to face Liverpool last Wednesday night and took another defeat, falling 101-83 to the Warriors.
And this came despite Zapisek’s pair of individual titles. In the 200 freestyle, Zapisek posted 2:08.93 to beat the field, following it up by edging Liverpool’s Maddie Rose, 58.30 seconds to 58.54, in the 100 freestyle.
The Wildcats went 1-2 in the 500 freestyle, where Allison Putnam won in 5:47.18 and Abrianna Gatschau was second in 5:53.48. Putnam also took second in the 200 IM (2:31.49).
A close 100 backstroke saw Ivery win in 1:10.12 over the Warriors’ Megan Winn (1:10.73), while Jasinski was second in the 100 butterfly in 1:07.70 to the 1:07.11 from Liverpool’s Jessica Testone, Jasinski also second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.94 as Ivery took second (27.12 seconds) to Testone (26.75 seconds) in the 50 freestyle.
Now WG would confront F-M, Liverpool and every other SCAC side in the group’s inaugural league invitational meet on Saturday, which doubled as a fund-raiser for the American Red Cross and its hurricane relief efforts. More than $2,000 was raised by the event.
Zapisek stood out with a pair of third-place finishes. In the 200 freestyle, she posted 2:04.71 to finish behind Jamesville-DeWitt teammates Amelia Hesler (1:59.18) and Alexis Phillips (2:02.53), while in the 100 freestyle Zapisek got a time of 57.72 seconds to trail Phillips (56.43) and F-M’s Cara Campell (57.06), with Jasinski sixth in exactly one minute and Murdoch 10th.
Haley Hagadorn made it to fourth place in the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.06. Jasinski, Ivery, Smith and Miki Riley were fifth in the 200 medley relay in 2:05.38, with Zapisek joining Riley, Morgan Cappon and Rachel Whiting to get fifth place in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:49.71 as the Wildcats were sixth (4:02.90) in the 400 freestyle relay.
Ivery got fifth place in the 50 freestyle in 26.68 seconds, with Murdoch eighth in 27.47 seconds as Ivery went on to earn a sixth-place finish (1:09.58) in the 100 backstroke. Putnam was eighth in the 200 IM (2:33.07), with Meghan O’Brien ninth in the 100 butterfly. Kathleen Draveck was 10th in diving.
