In vastly different manners, the Westhill and Marcellus girls tennis teams fell out of the Section III Class B team tournament.
The no. 8 seed Mustangs got through its opening-round match with Homer, prevailing 5-2, but on the morning of Oct. 1 the no. 11 seed Warriors, visiting no. 6 seed Camden, fell just short in a 4-3 defeat to the Blue Devils.
At least that was close, unlike the Mustangs’ quarterfinal last Monday against top seed Oneida, who kept Marcellus off the board in a 7-0 defeat.
Proving more competitive on the doubles side, Marcellus saw Megan Mitchell and Briyana VanHelsingden go to a second-set tie-breaker in a 6-1, 7-6 defeat to Mattie Hicks and Sophia Skinner. Kaitlyn Kemp and Morgan Walsh fell to Molly Moyer and Meghan Friske 6-1, 6-4.
Elsewhere in doubles, Elaina and Madeline Mahoney lost, 6-2, 6-3, to Catherine Brown and Emily Marshall, with Alyssa Goodwin and Caroline Keegan falling to Anna Hood and Julianna Cavanagh 6-1, 6-2. In singles, Courtney Otis and Mikayla Cusick each took 6-1, 6-0 defeats to, respectively, Brianna Laureti and Sydney Lusher, with Marcy Gosson falling to Lauren Skibitski 6-0, 6-0.
West Genesee didn’t participate in the sectional Class A tournament, but instead had one more regular-season match where it shut out East Syracuse Minoa 7-0.
Katie Viau was impressive in a 6-0, 6-0 singles shutout of Kim Pham, with Angelina Llanos handling Julia Barnwell 6-0, 6-1 and Emma Yeager also prevailing. The doubles teams of Mikayla Mannara-Phoebe Nelson, Anastasia Mello-Noelle Thurston, Mi Tran-Annabelle Levy and Elisha Strachan-Chloe Soltys all won in straight sets, too.
