The Fayetteville-Manlius and Christian Brothers Academy girls tennis teams are on the brink of finishing off undefeated regular seasons.
CBA did not even drop a point until its eighth match against Skaneateles Sept. 15, but still won that clash with the Lakers 6-1 and moved on to more domination in last Monday’s 7-0 win over Jordan-Elbridge.
Only Calista Albring gave up a game in singles against the Eagles’ Maria LaFleur in her 6-0, 6-1 victory as Rena Steele and Gieselle Vlassis each won 6-0, 6-0 singles battles over, respectively, Abby Skotinski and Wendy Carter. Between them, CBA’s four doubles teams of Mikayla Santulli-Grace Coyne, Anna Sasser-Gabby Catalano, Alison Brown-Mary Kilmartin and Virgnia Nash-Rati Saini dropped just two games in eight combined sets.
What followed, in Wednesday’s match against Cazenovia, was the Brothers’ closest call yet, with multiple points surrendered – yet the Brothers still beat the Lakers 5-2.
Three different matches went to three sets, but two of them turned in CBA’s favor. In singles, Steele had handled Lucy Langan 6-0, 6-1 and Vlassis had beaten Julia Barrett 6-0, 6-3, but DelPino needed to go a third set to get a 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 win over Laura Connor.
Meanwhile, in doubles, Grace Glowaki and Aubrey Mills won a 6-0, 7-6 (10-8) decision over Kaitlyn Puffer and Charlie Harriswith Brown and Kilmartin hanging on in a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 victory over Meg Milmoe and Abby Burrell. Also in three sets, Sasser and Catalano lost, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, to Annika Bruno and Lizzy Druke.
F-M, to start its week, beat West Genesee 7-0 last Monday in a match far more lopsided than the 5-2 decision the Hornets claimed when they first met on Sept. 6. Maggie Bonomo beat Angelina Llanos 6-1, 6-1, with Katerina Atallah blanking Natalie Thurston 6-0, 6-0 as Anna Manta got her own 6-0, 6-0 win over Greta Hahn.
Keara Polovick and Phoebe Wang needed three sets and a comeback to beat Andrea Andreeva and Phoebe Nelson 4-6, 7-6, 6-3. Between them, F-M’s doubles teams of Patrice Calancie-Martha Welker and Rachel Liu-Cassie Wojtasiewicz dropped just one game in four total sets.
During Wednesday’s 7-0 romp over Cicero-North Syracuse, F-M was paced in singles by Atallah, who beat Ava Breitbeck 6-2, 6-0, and Manta, who topped Nicole Perrigo by those same scores. Maddy Drepaeau and Diana Polovick had the toughest doubles match, beating Vanessa Luanagaphay and Lexi Pyke 6-2, 6-3.
Yet another 7-0 shutout followed on Friday, F-M this time handling Baldwinsville, starting with Atallah’s 6-1, 6-1 singles win over Paige Tromblee and continuing with Manta rolling past Benton Audrey 6-0, 6-1 as Wang had a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ella Tromblee.
Moving to doubles, Alexis Ahn and Samhitha Adavikolanu got a chance to play and won, 6-3, 6-4, over Jessica Rush and Taylor Tripodi. Bonomo and Polovick won a 6-3, 6-0 duel over Emily Faldeau and Alina Minkova, with Drapeau and Liu beating Allison Delaney and Hannah Gold 6-2, 6-1. Calancie and Wojtasiewicz paired up and won, 6-1, 6-0, over Hannah Manning and Riley Warren.
