Again it’s reaching the point where no one can take a point from the Fayetteville-Manlius girls tennis team.
Bothered plenty in past matches against Baldwinsville, the Hornets blanked the Bees 7-0 last Monday afternoon, with Maggie Bonomo setting the tone in singles with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Brooke Tutor as Phoebe Wang stopped Lauren Devine 6-1, 6-1 and Anna Manta handled Paige Tromblee 6-0, 6-2.
As for the doubles matches, F-M had Martha Welker and Patrice Calancie beat the Bees’ Riley Warren and Katrina Gays-Peterson 6-3, 6-1 as Cassie Wojtasiewicz and Rachel Liu beat Ella Tromblee and Benton Audrey by those same scores. Katerina Atallah and Diana Polovick shut out Alina Minkova and Allison Delaney 6-0, 6-0 as Keara Polovick and Maddy Drapeau beat Emily Faldeau and Hannah Gold 6-2, 6-1.
A 7-0 shutout of Liverpool followed on Wednesday afternoon, the seventh point preserved when Phoebe Wang, in third singles, outlasted Gabby Underwood 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Every other match was won in two sets, the closest of them having Drapeau and Keara Polovick beat Valerie and Crystal Morgans 6-4, 6-4.
F-M routed Syracuse East 7-0 on Friday, with only Keara Polovick facing any real dent in her singles match, but she beat Meiling Le 6-2, 6-1. None of the doubles teams of Atallah-Maggie Bonomo, Drapeau-Diana Polovick, Calance-Welker and Emily Chou-Freda Ni lost a game in any of their matches.
Christian Brothers Academy remained undefeated, too, and its biggest win came last Tuesday as it clashed with fellow unbeaten Manlius-Pebble Hill and emerged with a 7-0 victory over the Trojans.
Rena Steele got it started with a 6-1, 6-1 sweep over Anna Szombathy. Gieselle Vlassis roared past Grace Walsh 6-0, 6-0, with Grace DelPino taking a turn in singles and defeating Parmees Fazeli 6-2, 6-0.
Anna Sasser and Grace Catalano emerged from a tough first set to beat MPH’s Halle Erwin and Genevieve Morrow 6-4, 6-1. Mikayla Santulli and Grace Coyne won, 6-0, 6-3, over Louisa Morrow and Lily Grenis, with the teams of Allison Brown-Mary Klimartin and Aubrey Mills-Grace Glowaki also winning in two sets.
A day earlier, CBA shut out Bishop Grimes 7-0. The singles trio of Steele, Vlassis and DelPino did not lose a game in any of their matches against the Cobras’ Liz Wolaver, Katie Knittel and Michela Marturano.
Thee doubles teams of Santulli-Coyne, Brown-Kilmartin and Mills-Glowaki, all earned shutouts as Sasser and Catalano beat Grimes’ Abby Wilkinson and Abby Fletcher 6-0, 6-1.
MPH had flattened Phoenix 7-0 last Monday, highlighted in singles by Szombatha stopping Gianna DeRoberts 6-2, 6-2, while Walsh got a 6-2, 6-3 win over Brielle DeRoberts. Moving to the doubles side, Morrow and Erwin won in straight sets, as did the teams of Cousins-Sara Antonevich and Eve Englich-Rebecca Church.
CBA moved from its win over MPH to a 7-0 romp over Chittenango where, in the seven matches, the Brothers only allowed four games in 14 sets. Kilmartin had two of them in a 6-0, 6-2 singles win over Alazne Perez as Steele and Vlassis had 6-0, 6-0 singles romps – Steele over Anna Rooney, Vlassis over Keelin Davie.
Moving on from that CBA defeat, MPH topped Mexico 6-1 on Wednesday, with Szombatha shutting out Joline Hernandez 6-0, 6-0 to lead the singles charge. In doubles, Erwin and Morrow nearly got pushed to a third set, but still beat Pettit and Trina Edwards 6-2, 7-5.
In Friday’s match at Skaneateles, CBA prevailed, 6-1, featuring yet another singles sweep from Steele, Vlassis and DelPino, who lost just two games between them. Despite a doubles defeat, the Brothers controlled this part, too, as Sasser and Catalano had the closest call and still won, 6-2, 6-2, over Llly Datz and Brinley Walewender.
Jamesville-DeWitt started last week with an impressive 7-0 romp over Oswego, Pushed a bit in second singles, Inka Gajra still beat the Buccaneers’ Alyssa Adner 7-5, 6-1 as Tara Pollock blanked Alaina McMahon 6-0, 6-0 and Anna Sophia Hege claimed a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Grace Hibbert.
In the closest of the four doubles matches, the Red Rams’ Olivia Frison DeAngelis and Lena Jones won, 6-3, 6-4 over Abigail McPherson and Abbey Yurkon, The teams of Margaret Frank-Olivia DeHoog, Sara Gow-Riya Sharma and Sonali Patel-Shannon Beaudry also won in two sets.
Another 7-0 shutout followed on Thursday, J-D this time handling Central Square 7-0, but it wasn’t that lopsided, despite easy singles wins by Pollock and Gajra.
Hege needed three sets to get past Victoria Tyrrell 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 while, in doubles, DeHoog and Frank beat Stephanie Kubis and Maddie Haley 6-0, 1-6, 6-2. Patel and Beaudry also needed three sets to top Haley Gugino and Catoo Lammerts 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
Grimes had also taken a 7-0 defeat to Cazenovia, the only close matches coming in singles, where Wolaver fell to Alex Galle 6-3, 6-1 and Knittel had a 6-1, 6-3 defeat to the Lakers’ Lucy Langan. In a 7-0 loss to Skaneateles, Knittel nearly got a set in a 6-0, 7-5 defeat to Ella Danforth, the closest of the seven matches.
Playing Friday at Homer, Grimes took a 5-2 defeat, earning points when Wolaver, in first singles, beat Catarina Kruman 6-3, 6-4 and Knittel got a 7-6, 6-3 decision over Marlena Kruman. But the Trojans swept the doubles, including a three-setter where Emily Cone and Lenora Cedrone lost, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5, to Alina Heyer and Jamee Triolo.
East Syracuse Minoa got close against Central Square last Monday, but took a 4-3 defeat, unable to claim a set in any of the singles matches against the Redhawks.
In doubles, the Spartans twice won in three sets as Shejia Hudjur and Christine Andrews rallied past Kubis and Victoria Tyrrell 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, with Alexis Stone and Erin Houghtaling putting together a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 win over Haley and Madeline Turo.
However, the Spartans did prevail, 7-0, over Syracuse West on Wednesday afternoon. Kim Pham topped Ana McGough 6-1, 6-0 in first singles as Maddy Woodson beat Kelly La 6-1, 6-2 and Julia Barnwell rolled past Dhruvi Patel 6-2, 6-2. In doubles, the teams of Hujdur-Andrews and Stone-Houghatling also won in two sets.
