It may have proved the greatest 24-hour stretch in the history of the East Syracuse Minoa girls track and field program.
The Spartans secured the OHSL Freedom American division regular-season title last Wednesday with an impressive 91-50 victory in a first-place showdown with Central Square on the Redhawks’ home track. Then ESM came home on Thursday afternoon and beat 14 other sides to win its own invitational meet.
First, there was the trip to Central Square, where every Spartans star made a key contribution, starting on the track with Mackenzie Bourdon taking the 100-meter hurdles in 17.4 seconds and the 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.1.
Lindsey Crego sparked the Spartans in field events with winning throws of 86 feet in the discus and 28’5” in the shot put, while Mia Montgomery unleashed a triple jump of 34’ 10 ¼” and Jennah Ferrari cleared 5 feet in the high jump.
Back on the oval, Sami Wysocki took the 100-meter dash in 13 seconds flat as Kat Boland went 1:06.1 in the 400-meter dash and Sage Almstead won the 800-meter run in 2:37.4. Also, ESM swept all three relay races.
That began with Almstead, Melanie DeFeo, Katherine Jacobs and Kassandra Burr taking the 4×800 in 10:46.7. Bourdon, Wysocki, Montgomery and Marissa Greiner sped through the 4×100 in 51.9 seconds and, in the 4×400, Bourdon, Boland, Wysocki and Jacinta Hensinger roared to victory in 4:34.2.
Not needing to rest, ESM then claimed 124 points at its own invitational meet to beat Corcoran’s second-place total of 82 points, while Christian Brothers Academy finished fourth with 50 points.
Much of the big success came in field events. Crego won the discus, throwing it 93 feet, and had a third-place shot put toss of 30’5 ¾” as Sara Bourdon was fourth, heaving it 29’ ¾”. Montgomery was second in the triple jump, going 35’3 ¼” as CBA’s Elissa Kempisty was third with 33’6 ¼”.
Ferrari finished second in the high jump, clearing 4’10”, and then made it to second place in the pole vault by topping 7 feet. In the long jump, Kempisty won for CBA with 15’10 ½”, but ESM’s Sophie Hartz got second place with 15’ ½” as teammate Maria Hall was fourth, going 14’7 ½”.
In the 4×800, ESM won as Almstead, Burr, DeFeo and Jacobs posted 10:56.77, the only time under the 11-minute mark as Manlius-Pebble Hill finished third in 11:46.55. Then, in the 4×400, Boland, Bourdon, Hensinger and Wysocki won in 4:30.51 as Carthage (4:47.16) was well back in second place.
Almstead was third (2:33.94) and Burr fifth (2:35.36) in the 800, while Boland took third place in the 400 sprint in 1:04.86 and Hensinger finished sixth. Greiner made to third place in the 200 in 28.10 seconds.

Montgomery, Wysocki, Greiner and Kaylee Delucia were third in the 4×100 in 52.34 seconds. Marina Lopez was fourth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase.
CBA had Deja Jones win the 3,000-meter run in 10:48.49 as ESM’s Sarah Tingley was fourth (12:44.07) and MPH’s Maja Cannavo was fifth. Cory Knox beat the field in the 400 hurdles in 1:11.58. Bri Pucci finished second in the 800 in 2:32.97, with Marni Rathbun fourth in 2:35.36. Skylar Decker was fifth in the 100 hurdles.
While all this was going on, The Jamesville-DeWItt boys track team completed its perfect OHSL Freedom National division run last Wednesday by smashing past Mexico 122-19, featuring plenty of top individual efforts.
Henry Middleton unleashed a discus toss of 105’9” to beat Mingus Betsey (101’2”) and going 37’1” in the shot put. Ryan Bradford, in 15.7 seconds, beat out Alex Carbacio (16.0) in the 110 high hurdles, and also won the triple jump by going 41 feet as he took second (20’1”) in the triple jump behind Mexico’s Jace Eastman, who went 20’7”.

Trey Greene cleared 5’6” to win the high jump as he, along with Mike Anderson, Murad Amurlayev and Seth Blair would take the 4×100 relay in 45.5 seconds. Amurlayev had a third-place triple jump of 20 feet.

ESM did not have similar success, falling to Central Square 87-54, though Isaiah Brooks did win the 110 hurdles in 15.6 seconds and helped the Spartans’ 4×100 relay team prevail in 45.2 seconds as Nick Berg claimed the mile in 4:45.3 and also won the 3,200 in 10:44.7.
Two days later, when the ESM boys took part in Baldwinsville’s John Arcaro Classic, Brooks again won the 110 hurdles, his time of 15.74 seconds the only one under the 16-second mark. Jared Henry finished sixth in the 800 in 2:03.73.
