It was not until the middle of last week that things warmed up, and dried up, enough for most of the area’s high school girls golf team to resume their seasons.
When they did, though, it proved quite exciting, especially on Thursday afternoon, when Christian Brothers Academy went to Butternut Creek and defeated Jamesville-DeWitt, while Fayetteville-Manlius stayed unbeaten and East Syracuse Minoa’s Blue team tied Auburn.
The match between CBA and J-D was tight all the way, but the Brothers pulled it out 163-165, led by Meghan McKeen shooting a nine-hole score of 35 and Annie Kilmartin adding a 41. Lena Jones posted a 32 to lead the Red Rams as Lizzie Redmore had a 42, two better than Tracey Edson.
As this was going on, F-M made its way to Westvale and pounded West Genesee 179-233. Again, Madison Kingsley led the way, shooting a 42 as Maggie Bonomo added a 43. Justine Burness and Campbell Kennedy both posted a 47, ahead of the Wildcats’ low round of 52 by Mikaela Riley.
Over at Arrowhead, ESM Blue and Auburn both finished at 203, both of them beating Oswego’s total of 216. And it happened despite Maroons star Lindsay May shooting a 34 to beat, by 14 shots, the top Spartans score of 48 by Audrey Rivers.
To catch up, ESM Blue needed a 51 from Kaleigh Graves and a 52 from Hannah Johnson, while Auburn’s Marki Flurschutz had a 49 and no other Maroons player shot better than 59. Danielle Delconte led Oswego with a 52 to match Johnson.
CBA had played its own match against Auburn on Tuesday, and took a 220-242 defeat to the Maroons at Highland. McKeen, with a 48, did finish second among individuals behind Auburn’s reigning state champion, Lindsay May, who had a 39. Mackenzie Griffith contributed a 59, while Annie Kilmartin had a 67.
J-D followed up the defeat to CBA by going to Oswego Friday and handling the Buccaneers 203-232. As she has done all season, Jones set the pace with a 42 as Alex Catanzarite put up a 45, each of them well clear of Catherine Volkomer, who led the Bucs with a 56.
Meanwhile, ESM Blue met CBA and the Spartans came out on top, 209-216, with its deeper lineup making up for the fact that McKeen easily claimed individual honors by shooting a 43.
Rivers, posting a 50, paced a Spartans quartet where Johnson shot a second consecutive 52, while Saran Moran posted a 53 and Erica Garm had a 54. By contrast, the next-best CBA rounds were twin 56s from Kilmartin and Griffith as Catherine Holstein finished with a 61.
