Once again, the Cazenovia boys golf team had to wait while area courses drenched by rains on the first weekend of May dried up.
At least the Lakers’ home course at Cazenovia Country Club was in better condition by the time it faced Altmar-Parish-Williamstown last Wednesday afternoon and roared to a 226-310 victory over the Rebels.
Cody Thorp nearly matched part with a nine-hole score of 37, and the lowest six rounds came from the Lakers. Geoff Christensen shot a 43, with Ryan Modzeleski adding a 44. Shton Schaffner finished with a 50 as Ryan Mistur posted a 52 and Eric Liddell finished with a 54.
What followed, on Friday afternoon, was an opportunity for Cazenovia to measure itself against the league’s best spring team, Marcellus, and do so at CCC. Despite a soid effort, the Lakers lost, 204-215, to the Mustangs.
Improving two shots from the APW match, Thorp had a 35, but Marcellus star Jay Colella beat him with a 34. Christensen, with a 39, was a shot behind the Mustangs’ Carter Austin.
Then, in the race for the other placements, Alex Pezzi had a 44, with Mistur earning a 48 and Schaffner a 49, but Marcellus got away thanks to twin 43s by Tom Fiacchi and Tim Sheridan, plus a 45 from Frank Szczech.
Back on a chilly Monday afternoon, the Cazenovia girls golf team returned to action and defeated Westhill 228-257. Erin Howles won a close race for the individual prize by shooting a 52 at CCC, two ahead of Hannah Staiger’s 54. Angela Vigliotti led the Warriors with a 61.
Chittenango, who had matches with Skaneateles and Central Square postponed earlier in the week, did not play until Thursday, when it lost, 207-242, to Marcellus. Megan Pierce, with a 58, was one shot ahead of Bears teammate Shannon Koegel as Rachel Cleary got a 60 and Haley Walters shot a 65. Marcellus got the four lowest individual rounds, led by Mary Colella’s 47.
Then, a day later, Chittenango fell to Skaneateles 198-258, with the Lakers posting the three lowest rounds as Jillian Barker, with a 46, beat out Karah Blair (47) and Jenna Field (48) for top honors.
