It took until the 10th match of the season for the Fayetteville-Manlius boys tennis team to drop a point in any of its matches.
That didn’t seem to matter much, though, as the Hornets still flew past Baldwinsville last Tuesday in a 6-1 decision, the second match win over the Bees this spring to go with one it earned on April 28.
B’ville broke through in second singles, where Alex Shaban beat Max Farber-McEntee 7-5, 6-2. Still, that was accompanied by Jeremy Zhang beating Antonio Marsallo 6-3, 7-5 and David Fernando routing Max Funicello 6-1, 6-1 in the other singles matches.
F-M dominated doubles, too, as Chris Lansing and Taran Judge beat Scott Ferrari and Sam Damato 6-1, 6-0. Ravi and Rohan Dhawan handled Ryan Shirk and Isiah Demoski 6-2, 6-2, while Joel Farella and Nolan Chiles beat David Rush and Anthony Pompo 6-3, 6-2. Richard Wang and Dilan Judge had a 6-3, 6-4 win over Kyle Robinson and Alex Taylor.
Playing again 24 hours later, F-M blasted Auburn in another 7-0 decision, with Riley Ma back in first singles as he blew past the Maroons’ Scott Minnoe 6-0, 6-0. Zhang beat Connor Davia 6-1, 6-0, with Fernando handling Shahil Patel 6-1, 6-0.
Taran Judge, now paired with Tom Miro, led the doubles sweep, beating Trevor Bohannon and William Clark 6-2, 6-0. Between them, the teams of Dhawan-Dhawan, Wang-Dilan Judge and Farber-McEntee-Joe Iskander dropped just three games in six total sets.
On Friday, F-M put away Syracuse East 7-0, with Miro and Jeremy Zhang prevailing in singles as, in doubles, the teams of Lansing-Taran Judge, Dhawan-Dhawan and Wang-Michael Zhang did not lose a game in any of their doubles matches. Farella and Chiles also won in two sets.
Manlius-Pebble Hill returned to action last Monday and blanked Onondaga 5-0, starting with Dan Braverman’s 6-0, 6-0 singles romp over Zach Hay and continuing with Charlie Mann handling Taylor Featherstone 6-0, 6-1 as Trilok Reddy beat Dan Kelly 6-0, 6-3.
Both doubles matches went to the Trojans in straight sets, too, as Goldman and Jeff Bush beat the Tigers’ Corey Guyder and Max Marcy 6-1, 6-3, while Keerthi Martyn and Dan Mezzalingua won by a 6-3, 6-2 margin over Wood and Jake Massaro.
On Wednesday, MPH routed Phoenix 5-0 as Reddy, Braverman and Mann lost just one game in six sets of singles play, Bush and Nick Jerge beat Evan Baldini and Brandon Mironti 7-5, 6-2, with Martyn and Mezzalingua beating Aaron Erwin and Sam Stellingwerf 6-0, 6-1.
Then MPH picked up a big 3-2 win over Cazenovia on Friday, the key blow coming in second singles when Braverman survived three sets and beat Mitch Romig 6-0, 6-7, 6-3 as Reedy lost, 6-0, 6-1, to Nate Romig, but Mann handled Orson Sproule 6-2, 7-5. Martyn and Mezzalingua shut out Jake Walburger and Carson Clonan 6-0, 6-0.
Bishop Grimes lost, 4-1, to Onondaga last Wednesday, in single-set matches that went to 10 games. Zed Weigand prevailed for the Cobras, beating Zach Hay 10-8, while Zach Schell had an 11-9 defeat to Dan Kelly. Harry Hu fell to Taylor Featherstone 10-5.
But the Cobras would rebound on Thursday and beat LaFayette 3-2 to earn its first win of the season, ending a five-match skid.
Schell, in singles, beat Noah Brothers 6-3, 6-2, and Wiegand topped Sam Adams 6-4, 6-1. Aiden Keenan lost, 6-0, 6-0, to Caleb Gretsky, but Alex McDonald and Jeff Wang got a doubles point when they topped Lexi Harrington and Zach Thrasher 6-1, 6-2.
Grimes then took a 4-1 defeat to Phoenix Friday, in single-set matches to 10 games. Wiegand had a 10-6 defeat to Brandon Mironti as Schell lost, 10-5, to David Burgess and Aiden Keenan fell to Evan Baldini 10-2.
