Amid its busiest and most important stretch of the season, the Skaneateles girls track and field team treated every meet with a serious intent, and the victorious results bore this out.
The Lakers went to Christian Brothers Academy’s annual Brother Basilian Invitational last Friday at Alibrandi Stadium and, earning 107 points, dominated a field of 18 teams as Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, with 58 points, was far back in second place and host CBA (58 points) finished third.
Raenah Campbell provided the big highlight when, in the 400-meter hurdles, she set a Skaneateles school record with a time of one minute, 4.89 seconds. The Drexel University-bound senior was part of a 1-2 finish as Julia Willcox had a strong second-place time of 1:06.90.
In addition to that record performance in the 400 hurdles, Campbell also won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.04 seconds, more than a full second ahead of CBA’s Skylar Decker (17.21) in second place. Brady Iles was seventh in 17.84 seconds.
Willcox would win, too, doing so in the 1,500-meter run as the senior finished in a time of 4:58.49, the only one under the five-minute mark, the chase pack including Natalie Condon, who finished third in 5:07.02.
Angela Krause went to the front in the 200-meter dash, taking that race in 27.06 seconds, well clear of Fowler’s Kadija Hill-Custis (27.45) as Maddie Peterson made her way to third place in 27.50 seconds. Krause also got fourth place in the 100-meter dash in 13.35 seconds.
Skaneateles also won the 4×400 relay as Willcox, Mia Grasso, Maddie Peterson and Shannan Roberts went 4:12.89 to pull away from Jordan-Elbridge, who was second with 4:19.78. Roberts also contended in the 400-meter dash, finishing second in 1:00.47 as Tully’s Jessica Donald won in 59.34 seconds and the Lakers’ Melissa Biver was 10th.
Shay McCarthy, Angelina Reese, Emme Conan (who was 12th in the 100 sprint) and Claire Raddant were fourth in the 4×100 in 54.08 seconds as Nicole DeRosa finished sixth in the 3,000-meter run in 11:34.93.
Of the field events, Skaneateles did best in the high jump, where Grasso cleared 5 feet, which East Syracuse Minoa’s Jennah Ferrari matched, but since Grasso had fewer misses, she took the title.
In the pole vault, Lyda Buck cleared 7 feet 6 inches, but was second because Homer’s Zoe Fish, who cleared the same height, had fewer misses. Buck also made it to ninth place in the long jump as Ali Grant got fifth place in the discus with a throw of 85’2” as Edan Howard finished 13th. Grant got 14th place in the shot put
Meanwhile, the Skaneateles boys track team managed 14 points in its portion of the Basilian meet, eight of them earned by Chase Corcoran in the discus as he threw it 132 feet 10 inches, second only to Nottingham’s Jaleel Berry, who won with 135’5”.
On the track, the Lakers saw Jon Metz, Liam Kerrigan, Calvin Blackwell and Nick Paciorek get to fifth place in the 4×800 relay in 9:00.13. Blackwell, Joe Capozza, Alex Wulff and John Lincoln were ninth in the 4×400 in 3:56.03. Individually, Luke Rathgeb rose to fourth place in the 3,200-meter run in 10:21.27.
Elsewhere, Cross Bianchi tied for seventh in the 100 sprint in 12.07 seconds. Nicola Kunz was 10th in the 110 high hurdles in 18.42 seconds, while Sam McClintic was 11th in the mile in 4:58.19 and Blackwell was 11th in the 400 sprint in 56.11 seconds. Paciorek got 13th place in the 400 hurdles.
