Following up its April 28 victory in the Chittenango Invitational, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls track and field team won again last Wednesday against West Genesee, pulling away to defeat the Wildcats 90-51.
As a starting point, the Hornets’ 4×800 relay team of Sophie Ryan, Phoebe White, Christy Berge’ and Rebecca Walters prevailed in nine minutes, 28.6 seconds. White went from there to running the 400-meter dash in 59.7 seconds and taking the 800-meter run in 2:18 flat.
Ryan handled 1,500 meters in 4:53.7 as Claire Walters needed 10:08.0 to beat the field at 3,000 meters. Palmer Madsen claimed the 200-meter dash in 27 seconds flat as Gwen Shepardson won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.7 seconds and Susan Bansbach won the 100-meter dash in 13.3 seconds.
Madsen, White, Ryan and Berge’ roared to a time of 4:03.4 in the 4×400 relay, while in field events Cady Barns went 15 feet 10 inches in the long jump and Sydney O’Dell won the high jump, clearing 4’10”.
This was a stark contrast to the F-M boys track team taking an 87-54 defeat to West Genesee, who got sweeps of the sprints and throwing events, along with victories in two of three relay races.
Still, the Hornets had Patrick Perry claim first place in the mile in 4:32.1 and Joe Walters win the 3,200-meter run in 9:35.4. Paired up, Perry and Walters, joined by Jack Boltman and Garrett Brennan, took the 4×800 relay in 8:29.8.
Stefen Mina earned F-M’s other track title, in the 400 hurdles, by finishing in 1:02.2. Romello Mitchell had a winning high jump clearance of 5’10”: as Ryan Kaczorowski won the long jump, going 18’5 ¾”. WG’s Evan Tuthill threw the discus 138’2” and the shot put 41’10 ¾” to lead his side.
Christian Brothers Academy was swept by Marcellus at the same track where some of the CBA girls athletes had competed four days earlier in the Skaneateles-Marcellus Invitational. In the boys 126-12 defeat, only Jorge Cabezas was able to win an event, uncorking a top shot put throw of 35’9”.
The girls 96-45 defeat to the Mustangs included Skylar Decker winning the 100 hurdles and Claire Bargabos taking the 100 sprint in 13.6 seconds. Deja Jones needed 1:05.1 to hold off Marcellus’ Mary-Catherine Coon (1:05.7) in the 400 sprint.
Elissa Kempisty swept to first-place finishes in the long jump (14’8”) and triple jump, where she went 32 feet. Cory Knox claimed the 800 in 2:35.5, with Marni Rathbun third. Lea Kyle won the 1,500-meter run in 5:21.7 right before pairing with Bargabos, Knox and Rathbun to take the 4×100 relay in 57.1 seconds.
Bishop Grimes lost, 110-23, to Cato-Meridian in last Wednesday’s meet. Abby Wilkinson gave the Cobras a victory in the 100 hurdles in 18.7 seconds, but the Blue Devils won every other event as Grace Cady swept the 800, 1,500 and 3,000-meter runs to pace Cato.
In the boys meet, Grimes had a 113-27 loss to Cato, where the Cobras’ Nigel Duffus won the shot put with a toss of 124’6 ½”. Nathan Gay prevailed in the high jump, clearing 5’8”, and was second in the long jump and 100 sprint as Chris Larson was second in the mile and Mitchell Collins was second in the 800.
