Whether in warm temperatures or cold, calm conditions or high winds, no one has proven able to keep the Fayetteville-Manlius girls golf team from staying unbeaten and atop their respective leagues.
Moving to 5-0, the Hornets turned back Liverpool 185-207 last Tuesday at Green Lakers, with its superior depth overcoming the low nine-hole score of 41 posted by the Warriors’ Solomia Avotins.
Maggie Bonomo paced F-M with a 43, two shots ahead of Madison Kingsley, with Bailey Wallace matching Liverpool’s Natalya Avotins as they both shot 46. It took twin 51s from Justine Burness and Grace Perry to help the Hornets pull away.
The fun F-M was having spread into practice rounds, too, for on Wednesday at Green Lakes Liz Truman pulled off the first hole-in-one of her golfing career.
Jamesville-DeWitt was also unbeaten – at least until Thursday’s match with East Syracuse Minoa Blue at Arrowhead, where the Spartans, in wet conditions, managed to stun the Red Rams 201-203.
Audrey Rivers led ESM Blue, as her score of 44 tied J-D’s Lena Jones for first place. Then Kaleigh Graves got a 50 for the Spartans, one ahead of the Rams’ Zoe Pippens (51), while Erica Garm had a 53.
Hannah Johnson, shooting a 54, clinched the victory since Garm and Johnson were one better than J-D’s duo of Lizzie Redmore (53) and Kelli Palumbo (55). Sarah Moran gave ESM Blue a 56, the same as the Rams’ Alex Catanzarite, while Shannon Marcy shot a 58, one better than Tracey Edson’s 59.
Back on Tuesday, J-D met Oswego at Butternut Creek, where windy conditions led to higher scores, but the Red Rams still beat the Buccaneers 172-180.
Much of that winning margin could get attributed to Jones shooting a 35, eight shots ahead of Palumbo’s 43, and each of them ahead of Oswego’s top trio as Maddie Swan and Hailey Furlong both shot 44 and Danielle Delconte earned a 45.
Following it up on Wednesday afternoon, J-D beat Central Square 179-195 at Greenview, where Jones continued to set the pace, shooting a 39. This time, it was Redmore finishing second with a 43 and Catanzarite posting a 44 ahead of the Redhawks’ Brooke Hollister, who led her side with a 47. Palumbo shot a 53.
As that was going on, ESM Blue was defeating Christian Brothers Academy 205-235 at Arrowhead, with Audrey Rivers shooting a 43 to lead the Spartans as Hannah Johnson got a 51. For CBA, Megan McKeen led with a 47 and Mackenzie Griffith posted a 52.
And while ESM Blue was defeating J-D, ESM Orange shot 256 in a three-team match against Westhill (234) and Skaneateles (221), with Helaina Scolaro shooting a 61 to lead the Spartans as the Lakers’ Jenna Field led with a 53.
CBA, when it took on Oswego Thursday, lost, 215-225, even though McKeen shot a 45, the best individual round by six shots over the Bucs’ Catherine Volcomer. Annie Klimartin had a 57, but three other Oswego golfers besides Volcomer matched or lowered that total, while Griffith had a 58 and Paige Snyder shot 65.
In boys golf, Manlius-Pebble Hill rolled again last Tuesday with a 216-245 victory over Fabius-Pompey. Johnny Gruninger shot a 37 at the Pompey Club as the Trojans boasted the top four individuals. Nathan Lesch had a 40, with George Bruno adding a 41 and Grant Lewis a 43 ahead of the Falcons’ Tyler Gorman, who led his side with a 46.
MPH won again on Thursday, topping Port Byron 206-225 in a match where the top three individuals were closely bunched, but Gruninger finished on top with a 37, one better than the Panthers’ E.J. Townsend as Lewis, with a 39, was two strokes back.
Bishop Grimes got into the win column Thursday by claiming a tough 260-271 decision over Pulaski, its only m atch of the week. All others were postponed by weather.
