What the Cicero-North Syracuse girls track and field team could not do against West Genesee, Liverpool managed to accomplish.
The Warriors would drop all three relays in last Wednesday’s meet against the Wildcats in Camillus, yet still prevail, 82-58, because it won most of the sprints and took five of six field events.
Kierra Richardson led the runners, going 12.6 seconds to take the 100-meter dash and adding a 200-meter dash title in 26 seconds flat. Lauren Fradette needed 17 seconds to beat the field in the 100-meter hurdles as Madison Neuner took the 3,000-meter run in 11:08.8.
WG got two wins apiece from Megan Delia (triple jump, 400 hurdles) and Emily Young (800 and 1,500 meters), but the Warriors countered with Amina Sinclair clearing 4 feet 10 inches in the high jump and Mackenzie Case topping 8 feet in the pole vault.
Meanwhile, in the shot put, Trinity Gray threw it 34’7”, augmented by Sarah Lavalley’s winning discus toss of 116’4”. Meghan Milazzo dominated the long jump with a leap of 16’7 ¼”, one of her best of the season.
The boys meet saw Liverpool handle West Genesee 91-50, with the key a near-sweep of the races led by Stephen Schulz, who ran 800 meters in 2:01.5 and claimed the mile in 4:52.2 as Ty Brownlow took the 400-meter dash in 52.5 seconds and Josh Hickmott won the 3,200-meter run in 10:39.5.
Nazir Murray was first in the 400 hurdles in 59.7 seconds as Tyler Goss won the 110 high hurdles in 17.2 seconds. Khalil Wailes ran the 200 in 22.3 seconds and, with Murray Paul Dewan and Ryan Dewan, helped win the 4×100 in 44.4 seconds. Brownlow helped Liverpool’s 4×800 side prevail in 8:32 flat.
Though WG won three of six field events, the Warriors still had Arthur Bittel throw the shot put 42’5”, while Ryan Dewan had a top long jump of 18’9 ½”. James Gaffney won the high jump, clearing 5’8”.
Liverpool was coming off a successful trip to the Rush-Henrietta Relays on April 22 near Rochester, where the girls Warriors won the team title with 138 points to the host Royal Comets’ 133 and the boys Warriors were third with 69 points behind R-H and Corning.
Richardson, Sinclair, Marissa Baskin and Annie Gullo beat the field in the 4×100 relay, edging Edison Tech, 52.01 seconds to 52.06, while also winning sophomore and freshman editions of the 4×100.
Jenna Schulz and Vanessa Eberhard combined to win the girls 1,500 with times adding up to 10:13.22, while Neuner and Natalie Kurz won the 400 hurdles in combined times of 2:29.01.
In the triple jump, Liverpool had Baskin and Fradette go 63 feet ¾ inch between them to win that title. Baskin and Ostrander took second place in the long jump (30’1”) as Kelley Townley tied for third in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet.
Lavalley won the individual portion of the discus, throwing it 105’9”, and with Evelyn Lamanche shared second-place team honors, with Lavalley and Madyson Oliveri getting third place in the shot put.
Kurz, Ardner, Gullo and Richardson would pull away to take the 4×400 relay in 4:22.23, while Baskin joined Ardner, Gullo and Richardson to take the 1,600 sprint medley in 4:16.50 as the Warriors were third in the 4×800 and distance medley, and fourth in the 800 sprint medley.
Meanwhile, in the boys meet, Schulz ran the mile in a winning time of 4:23.38 as he and Brownlow (4:28.37) claimed the team portion, too. Murray had the top time of 1:00.03 in the 400 hurdles and, with Goss, won with a total of 2:03.64.
Brownlow, Schulz, Josh Hickmott and Alex Ruston paired up and won the distance medley relay in 10:37.23. The Warriors were fourth in the 4×400 varsity and freshman relays, and took fifth place in the 4×800 and 1,600 sprint medley.
Goss and Gaffney cleared 20 feet between them in the pole vault for second place, as Antwan Kelly threw the discus 111’7” and Bittel heaved it 105’8” to produce another second-place finish, Bittel getting second place (44’8’1/2”) in the shot put. Paul Dewan and Ryan Dewan were fifth in the long jump. Ruston and Paul Dewan earned a third-place finish in the triple jump, going 78’7 ¼” between them.
Quickly bouncing back from its loss to West Genesee the week before, the Cicero-North Syracuse girls track and field team dominated last Wednesday’s meet against Nottingham, putting together a 107-16 victory over the Bulldogs.
The C-NS boys handled Nottingham 98-24, with Joe Williams going 14.5 seconds in the 110 hurdles and winning the 400 hurdles in 59.5 seconds as Ryan Williams won the 400 sprint in 58.8 seconds. Jeremiah Willis had a top long jump of 21’4 ¼”and won the triple jump by going 44’9 ½”.
Tyler Days ran the 200 sprint in 23.5 seconds John Perperian was first in the 800 in 2:16.8 as Sam Barber took the 3,200 (10:22.7) and Joe Triarico won the mile in 5:00.2. Barber helped the Northstars’ 4×800 team prevail in 9:32.8.
