Madison County rivals gathered for a girls golf match last Friday at Woodcrest, and it was Chittenango emerging with the victory over Cazenovia in a close match where the Bears, with the two lowest individual rounds, prevailed 247-256 over the Lakers.
It was close at the top, but Cazenovia’s Erin Howles, with a 52 for nine holes, finished in front of Maleigha Ellithorpe, who had a 53. And they were both in front of Chittenango’s Jennie McIntosh, who led her side with a 54.
But Rachel Cleary got a 57 for the Bears, three behind McIntosh, while Shannon Koegel shot 63 and Anna Norman shot 73 as Chittenango pulled in front, overcoming the 71 from Cazenovia’s Hannah Staiger.
Two days earlier, by a single shot, Cazenovia pulled out its match against Westhill, prevailing 219-220 over the Warriors at Camillus Country Club.
Like she would against Chittenango, Howles led the Lakers’ efforts, posting a 50 for nine holes. Howles and Ellithorpe, who shot 52, had the two lowest individual rounds, ahead of Westhill’s Ellie Masterpole, who had a 53. Carolyn Benn contributed a 53.
Before this, Cazenovia hosted Marcellus last Monday afternoon and lost, 217-229, to the Mustangs. Though Ellithorpe and Howles both shot 54 at Cazenovia Country Club, the Mustangs’ Mary Colella beat them both by 10 strokes, posting a 44 as Grace Alexander (56) helped her.
Chittenango opened its week of action last Monday with a 217-233 defeat to the same Westhill side Cazenovia would beat later in the week.
It was a tight race for individual honors, with the Bears’ Megan Pierce shooting a 53 and McIntosh adding a 55, each of them trailing Masterpole and Angela Vigliotti, who had matching totals of 51 to lead Westhill.
Then, against Skaneateles on Wednesday, Chittenango took a 219-245 defeat. McIntosh had a 59, with Cleary shooting a 61 to beat out Pierce (62) and Koegel (63), but they were all far behind the Lakers’ Jillian Barker, whose 45 beat teammate Addison Gremly by 11 shots for the low individual round.
In boys golf, Cazenovia lost a close 263-267 decision to Marcellus on Thursday afternoon. Alex Pezzi shot a 39, one ahead of teammates Cody Thorp and Geoff Christensen, but the Mustangs had a bit more depth as Frank Szczech and David Bosak both shot 42, with Jay Colella and Carter Austin each posting 43.
A day later, the Lakers completely turned it around, routing Jordan-Elbridge 208-271 at Millstone. Thorp tore his way to a 34 and Pezzi shot a 39, with Christensen getting a 42. Jacob Wells finished with a 46 and Ryan Mistur had a 47 in front of the Eagles’ top individual, Max Bondgren, who shot 51.
