It proved quite a Tuesday for Megan Delia and the rest of the West Genesee girls track and field team, as Delia won three events, broke a school record and helped the Wildcats put together an impressive 86-54 victory over visiting Cicero-North Syracuse.
Delia’s school mark came in the triple jump, where she shattered the previous standard by going exactly 36 feet. That came on the heels of two victories on the oval as Delia ran the 200-meter dash in 27.76 seconds and claimed the 400-meter hurdles in 1:08.22.
Overall, it was quite a team effort from WG, starting in the 4×800 relay, where Mia Mitchell, Liz Morey, Mikeaykla DeJesus and Amanda Lowther prevailed in 10:05.48. Delia, Kelsey Fox, Caitlin Mills and Talia Burris took the 4×100 in 51.24 seconds as Fox, Carly Benson, Emily Young and Kendall Dombroske were victorious in the 4×400 in 4:13.08.
Mills would beat the field in the 100-meter dash in 13.27 seconds after Anna Chwiejczak was first in the 100-meter hurdles in 18.07 seconds. Young would tear to first place in the 1,500-meter run in 4:47.48 before Benson went 2:27.11 to take the 800-meter run.
And though C-NS claimed four of the six field events, WG still found plenty of success, both with Delia’s record triple jump and Fox landing in first place in the long jump by going 14’8”.
In the boys meet, West Genesee lost, 97-40, to C-NS, despite two wins apiece from David Leff and Evan Tuthill. Leff ran the mile in 4:34.37 and got a winning time of 2:02.87 in the 800, while Tuthill unleashed a discus throw of 129’7” after winning the shot put with 44’9”.
David Wenner had the Wildcats’ lone other win, clearing 5’6” in the high jump. For C-NS, Jeremiah Willis won four times, taking the 100 (11.26 seconds) and 200 (22.60 seconds) sprints, while also going 20’6” in the long jump and 42’1” in the triple jump.
Three days later, WG’s boys team routed Corcoran 108-24, with Leff nearly matching his mile time from earlier the week, finishing in 4:35.5 as he also claimed the 3,200-meter run in 10:05 flat.
Tuthill improved on his discus throw to 140’5” while also winning the shot put with a toss of 43’7 ½”. Griffin Dombroske went 18’8” in the long jump and followed up with a top triple jump of 38’7”. Wenner again topped 5’6” in the high jump.
Tim Huppman went 1:03.6 in the 400 hurdles, with Russ Graziano taking first place in the 800 in 2:12.5 and also helping the Wildcats take the 4×800 in 9:22.6. WG swept the relays, going 53.1 seconds in the 4×100 and 3:50.7 in the 4×400.
The girls Wildcats also won over Corcoran, though by a smaller 85-45 margin. Delia couldn’t match her record triple jump from earlier in the week, but still went 33’7” to go with a top time of 1:10.2 in the 400 hurdles.
Young broke the one-minute mark in the 400 sprint, finishing in 59.5 seconds. Mitchell went 2:29.1 in the 800, with Kendall Dombroske claiming the 1,500 in 5:07.0 and Benson winning the 3,000 in 10:49.6. Fox again prevailed in the long jump with a top leap of 13’6”.
