A big early-season test for the West Genesee track and field teams came last Wednesday when they both took on Baldwinsville at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium, but were unable to win either side of the meet.
It was closer in the girls portion, with the Wildcats falling to the Bees 77-63 despite a series of strong individual efforts that started in the 1,500-meter run, where Carly Benson prevailed in four minutes, 54.2 seconds and Emily Young was second in 5:00.1.
Young had her turn in the 800-meter run, prevailing in 2:24.3 as Benson was second in 2:25.2. Kendall Dombroske tore to victory in the 400-meter dash in 1:02.54, with Abby Kuppinger second in 1:04.39. Mia Mitchell won the 3,000-meter run in 11:00.77.
Megan Delia was second in the 400 hurdles in 1:08.8, but would prevail in the triple jump, going 31’6” as Katherine Graziano (28’1”) was behind her. Etana Davis threw the shot put 27 feet to hold off Elizabeth Jones (26’3”) for the top spot. Caitlin Burns and Talia Mills both cleared 4’4” in the high jump.
WG’s boys team lost, 106-34, to B’ville, but still had David Leff roar to victory in the 800 in 1:57 flat as Ryan Dunning got third place in 2:07.37. Leff didn’t stop there, going to the 3,200-meter run and winning that race in 9:46.78.
Andrew Berry was second in the 200 in 23.88 seconds and third in the 100 sprint in 11.61 seconds, with Brian Morabito third in the 110 hurdles. Tim Huppman needed 1:03.14 for third place in the 400 hurdles as Esisas Brumfield was third (24.09 seconds) in the 200.
In field events, Evan Tuthill won the discus with a toss of 122’9” to edge B’ville’s Judson Fletcher (121’6”) and threw the shot put 42’7” to gain second place. Peter Bowman cleared 9’6” in the pole vault, while Griffin Dombroske was second in the triple jump with 38’2” and third (18’11”) in the high jump.
Marcellus would compete on Thursday afternoon, with the girls Mustangs getting past the Bears 99-41, but the boys taking a 75-66 defeat.
In the girls meet, Mary Catherine Coon and Macie Szalach each won twice, with Coon taking the 100 sprint in 13.5 seconds and the high jump by clearing 7 feet as Szalach went 28’6” in the triple jump and won the 400 hurdles in 1:19 flat.
Morgan Gould took the 1,500 in 5:32.2 and Liliana Cushman won the 3,000 in 11:43.7. Alaura Cushman took the 200 as Crystal Silliman went 1:08.6 in the 400 sprint. Coon, Szalach, Silliman and Victoria Moncavage won the 4×400 in 4:48.0.
Emma Stuart threw the discus 71’5” and Michaela Godbold threw the shot put 28’6”, Marcellus sweeping those events along with all field events. Angelina VanCamp had a top long jump of 13’3 ½”and Hannah Ryan cleared 7 feet in the pole vault.
In the boys meet, Marcellus saw Mike Provvidenti win twice, rolling to first place in the 400 sprint in 55.1 seconds and taking the 200 in 23.6 seconds to edge Chittenango’s Nick Stanton (23.9), while Matt Strempel, in 2:09.8, held off the Bears’ Jacob Blaszkow (2:11.0) in the 800.
Provvidenti and Strempel were on the Mustangs’ winning 4×400 relay team that finished in 3:48 flat, with Marcellus also winning the 4×100 in 51.3 seconds as Provvidenti ran a leg here, too.
Sam Stearns, clearing 10’6”, won the pole vault for the Mustangs as Sean Raymond topped 5’4” to prevail in the high jump. Tyler Wetherall unleashed a top triple jump of 39’11” as Caleb Wetherall, with a long jump of 18’8”, edged Stanton (18’7 ½”) by half an inch.
Back on Wednesday, Solvay would take on Skaneateles, and could not win on either side of that meet, though it was closer in the boys Bearcats’ 83-58 defeat to the Lakers.
Jordan Devereaux (11.3 seconds) and Lamar Flood (11.6 seconds) went 1-2 in the 100 sprint, and Devereaux would also win the 200 in 23.8 seconds, with Dylon Ewers second in the 400 hurdles in 1:06.7.
Flood and Ewers both went 19’1” in the long jump, but Ewers won outright in the high jump, clearing 5’8” as Nate Gardner topped 5’4”. Flood beat the field with a triple jump of 40’3” as Tariq Block was second (34’8”) to go with a third in the pole vault. Greg Miller and Shane Spinner were second and third, respectively, in the shot put, with Gardner throwing the discus 107’6” for second place and Spinner third here, too.
In the girls meet, Solvay fell to Skaneateles 107-30, only winning two events – the shot put, where Ashley Bosco heaved it 39’1”, and the high jump, where Alexa Bagozzi cleared 4’6”, the same height as teammate Kyra Crossett.
Haley Muehl was second in the triple jump (25’4), while Zoe Francemone had a third-place long jump of 13’5”. Jordyn Willsey was second in both the 800 (2:46.1) and 1,500 (5:41.9), with Serenity Thomas third in the 100 hurdles, Leda Jaquin third in the 3,000 and Kathleen Demong third in the 100 sprint.
Jordan-Elbridge met up with the other Lakers from Cazenovia, where it lost 91-46 in the girls meet and pulled a bit closer in the boys meet, but still took an 82-59 defeat.
Ethan Kinney edged Cazenovia’s Alec Boone in the 100, though both finished in 11.6 seconds, and then Kinney won outright in the 400 sprint in 54.8 seconds before Ryan Chiaramonte took the 400 hurdles in 1:04.5.
Completing his sprint sweep, Kinney won the 200 in 24 seconds flat, with Nate Jennings third in 25.4 seconds. As if that wasn’t enough, Ethan Kinney joined Logan Kinney, plus Chiaramonte and Marion Quigley, as J-E sped to first in the 4×400 relay in 3:42.1. Chiaramonte was second in the 110 hurdles.
Cazenovia swept all of the first-place finishes in field events. The Eagles did best in the high jump, where Quigley was second by clearing 5’2”, and the pole vault, where Jennings topped 9 feet for his own runner-up finish. Quigley also was second in the long jump, going 16’8”, while Austin Cassick was third in the shot put.
