Twice in a three-day span, the Liverpool track and field teams would find widespread success, giving their respective 2017 seasons the right kind of start.
First, the Warriors took part in last Monday’s East Syracuse Minoa Specialty Qualifying Invitational, winning plenty of events on the girls and boys sides.
Marissa Baskin, Kierra Richardson, Grace Kouame and Amina Sinclair beat the field in the 4×100 relay in 50.81 seconds. Then Baskin, on her own, went 15 feet 11 ½ inches to prevail in the long jump as Alexia Ostrander (14’11”) finished third. Baskin was second (34’11 ¾”) and Lauren Fradette third (30’1 ¾”) in the triple jump.
Madison Neuner, in 1:11.84, beat out teammate Kaitlynn Luong (1:16.95) as part of a 1-2 finish in the 400 hurdles. Trinity Gray needed a throw of 31’3” to prevail in the shot put, with Madyson Oliveri third and Sarah Lavalley fifth, but Lavalley got second place in the discus with a toss of 85’7”, with Evelyn Lamanche third and Gray in fifth place.
Meghan Milazzo won the high jump, clearing 5 feet as Sinclair (4’10”) and Ostrander (4’8”) were close behind. Kelley Townley cleared 10 feet to take the pole vault as Mackenzie Case topped 7 feet.
Moving to the boys side at ESM, Steve Schulz rolled to first place in the 800-meter run in 1:59.04, while Ty Brownlow was fourth and Nathan Reeves fifth. Josh Hickmott needed 10:37.80 to beat the field in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as Emil Videman was third in 10:59 flat.
Nazir Murray went 16.07 seconds for second place in the 110 high hurdles, but joined Paul Dewan, Khalil Wailes and Mike Mahan to win the 4×100 in 45.44 seconds. Tyler Goss got third place in the 400 hurdles in 1:05.12. James Gaffney tied for third in the pole vault (10’6”) and shared fourth place in the high jump.
Arthur Bittel threw the shot put 42’2” to get second place, adding a third-place discus toss of 116’7” as Jacob Barnes took fifth place. In the triple jump, Paul Dewan finished second, going 40’8 ¼”, while Ryan Dewan was third (39’5 ½”) and Alex Rusten fourth (38’7”).
This was followed by last Wednesday’s CNY Counties League opener, a sweep of Nottingham where the boys Warriors faced some challenges, but still pulled away to beat the Bulldogs 108-32.
Nathan Reeves ran the mile in 4:48.7 and added a victory in the 800 in 2:07.3. Murray went under a minute in the 400 hurdles – 59.72, to be exact – with Conor Fahey first in the 400 sprint in 57.64 seconds. Tyler Goss went 17.25 seconds in the 110 high hurdles.
The Warriors claimed the 4×800 in 9:59.53, also taking the 4×100 in 44.92 seconds as Wailes ran in the latter relay and, on his own, won the 200 in 23.45 seconds. Schulz got to first place in the 3,200 in 9;47.02 as Liverpool’s 4×400 side finished in 4:07 flat. Gaffney again cleared 10’6” in the pole vault.
The Liverpool girls beat Nottingham 128-12, with Richardson taking the 100 (12.97 seconds) and 200 (27.24 seconds) sprints. Baskin also won twice, going 34’ 1 ¼” in the triple jump and also prevailing in the long jump. The Warriors were first in the 4×800 (11:24.45) and 4×400 (4:30.00) relays.
Townley cleared 9’6” in the pole vault, with Ostrander topping 4’6” in the high jump. Lavalley unleashed a top discus throw of 104’11” and Gray threw the shot put 30’8”. Schultz won the 1,500 in 5:06.61 as Neuner took the 400 hurdles in 1:13.17. Ardner needed 2:25.59 to prevail in the 800 as Fradette was first in the 100 hurdles (17.74 seconds) and Annie Gullo took the 400 sprint in 1:05.59.
Cicero-North Syracuse met Corcoran on Wednesday and routed the Cougars 126-15 in the boys meet. Jeremiah Willis was victorious in the 200 in 23.2 seconds, later going 20’6” in the long jump and winning the triple jump by going 40’8”.
Joe Williams roared to first in the 110 hurdles in 14.8 seconds, Zak Kennedy took the 400 sprint in 55.0 seconds as Ryan Williams was first in the 400 hurdles in 1:01.6 as Kennedy cleared 5’6” to win the high jump.
Matt Kilian claimed the 100 sprint in 11 seconds flat, with Cameron Pisa throwing the shot put 41’4” for another victory as Dan Swackhamer won the discus with a toss of 105’7”.
In the distance races, Brandon Martin needed 4:59.0 to beat the field in the mile, with David Ware going 2:13.7 to take the 800 and Nathan Poirier winning the 3,200 in 10:20.3. Poirier also helped Sam Barber, Calvin Garnes and Joe Tricarico take the 4×800 relay in 9:20.7 as C-NS also won the 4×400 in 3;44.3.
