With a chance to get a big win last Monday night, the Cazenovia girls lacrosse team nearly pulled it off, only to get thwarted at the last second by Westhill and take an 11-10 defeat to the Warriors.
It would go back and forth from the outset, neither side able to make any kind of sustained run during a first half that ended on even terms, 4-4. They remained tight in the early portion of the second half, and it was 7-7 when Megan Henderson’s goal with 11:35 left pushed the Lakers in front.
Keara Dwyer added a goal and, with 4:12 to play, Chloe Willard took advantage of a strong Cazenovia clear and pushed home a goal that gave the Lakers a 10-8 edge. One more draw, or stop, was needed to put things away.
Instead, it was Westhill stepping up, netting three straight goals down the stretch to retake the lead, and then hanging on when Willard, who had four goals on the night, saw her last-second tying shot stopped by Warriors goalie Morgan Elmer.
Dwyer and Molly Brown both scored twice to aid Willard, with Grace Rajkowski also earning a goal. Lucy Connor was held to one assist as Laura Lorraine recorded 10 saves, one more than Elmer. For Westhill, Haileigh Farrell, Caroline Miller and Sam VanBuren each netted three goals.
Having fallen to 3-4, Cazenovia looked to get back to the .500 mark in Wednesday’s game against Bishop Ludden-Bishop Grimes, and did so with relative ease, the Lakers prevailing 18-5 at Onondaga Community College’s turf with an attack that picked things up even after it gained an 8-3 halftime lead.
Willard proved unstoppable, reaching double digits in points thanks to six goals and four assists. Dwyer scored four times and got an assist. Connor notched a three-goal hat trick, while Brown had two goals and one assist. Henderson, Rajkowski and Mikaylee Whalen notched single goals.
Chittenango earned its second win of the season last Tuesday in a narrow 6-5 decision over Onondaga. Both sides scored just once in the first half, but as the pace picked up in the second half, the Bears inched in front of the Tigers and held on.
Maddie Flack nearly carried Chittenango’s attack, netting four of the team’s six goals. Tiffany Scofield netted two assists as the other goals went to Kaiden Williams and Taylor Glazier. For OCS, Lisa Morocco put in four of her team’s five goals.
