Each of the Skaneateles indoor track and field teams would find plenty of success when they traveled to Utica College’s Hutton Dome for its first action of the season in the Mohawk Valley Team Relays.
In the girls meet, the Lakers finished with 56 points, rising to third place. Only Rome Free Academy, with 67 points, and Clinton, with 59 points, fared better in an 18-team field.
Skaneateles was triumphant in the girls 4×400 relay, seeing the quartet of Mia Grasso, Kyla Sears, Abby Logan and Shay McCarthy post a time of four minute, 27.82 seconds, topping runner-up Baldwinsville (4:30.53) by nearly three seconds.
Moving to the 1,600 sprint medley relay, the Lakers again finished on top as Grasso, joined by Maddie Peterson, Julia Willcox and Angela Krause, got a time of 4:27.90 and pulled away from RFA, who had to settle for second place in 4:29.72. Grasso cleared 5 feet in the high jump to tie for third among individuals.
Mikaela Terhune and Brady Iles won the girls 55-meter hurdles, their times of 19.58 seconds putting them more than a second ahead of West Canada Valley (20.87 seconds) and the field. Then, in the 55-meter dash, Peterson and Krause, with top-five individual times, combined to go 15.61 seconds and edge Poland (15.97 seconds) for the top spot.
Natalie Condon, Maddy Brogan, Nicole Derosa and Georgia McSwain ran in the 1,500-meter relay, their total times of 23:05.21 putting them in third place behind Clinton and Rome Free Academy. Another third-place finish came in the 4×400 as Iles, Terhune, Emme Conan and Melissa Biver finished in 1:56.91, not far behind RFA (1:56.83) and Homer (1:55.39). Becca Rottger and Ali Grant were sixth in the shot put with throws of 49’6” between them.
Meanwhile, in the boys Mohawk Valley Team Relays, Skaneateles gained 45 points and was fifth among 19 teams. Baldwinsville prevailed with 66.5 points.
The Lakers’ best track finish came in the 4×200, where Pat Hackler, Brahm Malcolm, Jon Metz and Alex Vanriper finished in 1:42.56 to get second place, though RFA (1:36.38) pulled away for the top spot. Vanriper joined Luke Palmer to get third place in the long jump, leaping a combined 35’6”.
Moving to the high jump, Malcolm, paired with Cross Bianchi, nearly won, their cobined clearances of 10 feet 9 inches topped only by Clinton, who won with 11 feet, just three inches better than Skaneateles.
In the 4×400, Nicola Kunz, Liam Kerrigan, Ryan Willcox and Connor Gell made it to fourth place in 4:11.64. Kunz and Malcolm and combined for fifth place in the 55 hurdles in a combined 18.67 seconds. Chase Corcoran and Clark Strang took fifth place in the shot put, with throws adding up to 75’2 ¾”.
Max Moss joined Lewis, Rathgeb and McClintic for sixth place in the sprint medley in 4:15.31. Moss and Vanriper were fourth in the triple jump, with leaps adding up to 70’7”, while Metz, Sam McClintic, Luke Rathgeb and Tyler Lewis were seventh in the 4×800 relay in 9:30.32.
