No one could keep up with the Cicero-North Syracuse boys track and field team during last Saturday’s afternoon session of the Jack Morse Kickoff Meet at SRC Arena.
Earning 102 points, the Northstars got away from Jamesville-DeWitt (75 points) in second place, while Liverpool, with 56 points, made it to third place.
To begin its runaway, C-NS had Joe Williams win the 55-meter hurdles in 7.96 seconds and Ryan Williams (8.55 seconds) get third place, their combined 16.51 seconds well clear of a field that included Liverpool’s Tyler Goss and Luke Harder (18.66 seconds) in fifth place.
Completing a 4×400 girls/boys sweep, the Northstars had David Ware, A.J. Wells, Calvin Garnes and Allen Garnes go 3:43.80 to finish more than seven seconds ahead of runner-up Chittenango (3:50.83). And in the 4×200 relay, Jeremiah Willis, Matt Kilian, Anthony Pauli and Joe Williams won in 1:35 flat, with Liverpool sixth in 1:46.35.
And even when Liverpool’s Brandon Mayfield won the 55-meter dash in 6.73 seconds, he and Paul Dewan, combining to go 13.98 seconds, had to settle for second place behind the Willis and Kilian, who both finished in the top five and combined for 13.61 seconds as Pauli finished sixth.
Helped by Nathan Poirier, Brandon Martin, Sam Barber and Jason Hughes all finishing within the top nine, C-NS roared to first place in the mile relay in 19:22.86. No one else broke the 20-minute mark, with Liverpool getting to fifth place in 21:27.39.
Dominating the pole vault, C-NS won with Ward Couillard clearing 11 feet 9 inches with fewer misses than Marcellus’ Sam Stearns, with Ryan Bristow (11’6”) and Alex Lepel (11 feet) close behind for the Northstars as the Warriors’ James Gaffney and Tyler Goss cleared a total of 19 feet for third place.
C-NS settled for second place in the 1,600 sprint medley, though Garnes, Ryan Williams, Zak Kennedy and Malcolm Christian posted 3:51.12, just behind J-D’s 3:50.04. Liverpool had Mayfield, Dewan, Khalil Wales and Thomas John Praschunas finish fourth in 4:09.84. Kennedy and Jason Hughes would finish third in the high jump, combining to clear 10’9”.
Willis and Dewan tied for first in the triple jump, each of them going 39’9 ½”, with Willis and Ryan Willaims second (73’11 ½”) and close behind J-D (74’1 ½”) at the top and Dewan and Ben Rivers getting sixth place. Joe Williams and Dan Swackhamer had total long jumps of 37’5 ½” to get second place behind J-D, with the Warriors in eighth place.
Liverpool did get a victory in the shot put, where Arthur Bittel and Antwan Kelly had combined throws of 80’9 ¾” and C-NS saw Mike Whentling and Andrew DeLore finish fourth, going 75;10 ¼”. Austin Kessler and Jamie Wong were fifth in the pole vault as C-NS’s Kaleb Woodcock and Ellijah Garcia were third with throws adding up to 60’6”.
Wales, Praschunas, Connor Fahy and Amandeep Sekhon made it to fifth place in the 4×400 relay in 3:59.38. Liverpool also was fifth in the 4×800 in 10:25.56 as Nick Brancato, Lenny Guenov, Nathan Gates and D.J. Rice took part.
