Though it was the second event of the winter for indoor track and field teams from Chittenango and Cazenovia, it was the first venture to Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena, where so many important meets take place during the winter.
In this case, it was last Saturday’s afternoon session of the Jack Morse Kickoff Meet, where the boys Bears had 41 points to finish sixth out of 11 teams, just ahead of the Lakers’ total of 35 points. Cicero-North Syracuse took the top spot with 101 points.
Chittenango’s Mike Capeling was the individual champion in the mile, posting a time of four minutes, 45.10 seconds, while teammate Ersilio Cerminero was fourth in 4:46.74 and, with Matt Morak and Dave Gratien, finished second on the team side in 20:08.44 to C-NS’s 19:22.86.
A team victory was earned in the weight throw, Chittenango having the duo of Diego Prado (third) and Trevor Conklin (fifth) post combined throws of 68 feet ½ inch, more than four feet ahead of Nottingham (63’9 ¼”) in the runner-up spot.
The Bears also contended in the 4×400 relay, where Jacobi Dwyer, Dylan Price, Nick Prenoveau and Nick Stanton posted a time of 3:50.83, finishing second to C-NS, who won in 3:43.80. Cazenovia was ninth in 4:10.36.
Codey Gumber, Dave Gratien, Alex Giancola and Nate Lampman finished fourth in the 4×800 relay in 10:20.60. Stanton, Dwyer, Price and Warren Tedford were fifth in the 1,600 sprint medley relay in 4:10.27. Joe Mosack and Brady Lewis were seventh in the shot put with combined throws of 64’9 ½”.
Cazenovia’s duo of Alec Boone and Ray Satchwell had combined long jumps of 37 feet 3 ¼ inches to get to third place, with Satchwell and Aiden Emhoff fifth (69’11 ½”) in the triple jump. Boone and Sean McPherson gained fifth place in the 55-meter dash, their times adding up to 14.16 seconds.
Boone and McPherson, paired with Angelo Annotto and Jack Eldred, got fifth place in the 4×200 relay in 1:44.40, ahead of Chittenango in ninth place. Jacob Olkowski and Christian Winkler were seventh in the 55-meter hurdles in a combined 19.77 seconds. Eldred and Trevor O’Herien were fourth in the weight throw with heaves of 39’2” as Chittenango prevailed.
Colin Killany and Dalton Sevier cleared 10 feet between them to gain fifth place in the high jump, while Winkler and Olkowski topped a total of 17’6” in the pole vault, again finishing fifth. Olkowski, Killany, Ray Satchwell and Noah Derochie were seventh in the sprint medley in 4:20.16.
The Chittenango girls team had 21 points in the afternoons session of the Morse meet. A top finish came in the 1,500-meter run, where McKenzie Dombroski, Lailah Emad, Jada Sowich and Maddy Heller rose to fourth place in total times of 24:04.18.
Dombroski, Heller, McKayla Capeling, and Eryn Thompson were sixth in the 4×800 in 11:23.32, with Thompson, Heller, Sarah Gratien and Alex Rheaume eighth (5:20.75) in the 4×400.
Lindsi Bertellia and Courtney Tadros were fifth in the shot put, tossing them a total distance of 44’3 ½”. Alyssa Kolb and Mia Morgillo were sixth in the long jump with leaps adding up to 25’11”. Kolb, by herself, was eighth in the triple jump. Bertellia, going 18’11” in the weight throw, earned fifth-place points alone.
